He entered the service under Captain John Deal in Germantown, Pennsylvania, as a substitute for Henry Switzer in the fell of 1778, as a drummer. He was drafted later in Berks County; drafted again in 1782 in Amity Township, Berks County. He was born in Baltimore, January 1, 1763. He was living at Chestnut Hill, ten miles from Philadelphia when he first entered service and lived afterwards in Berks County until he was 18 years of age.
