Little Mother Shows Efficiency In Peril - Seventeen-Year Old Girl Carries Brother and Sister From Burning House -- Regina SHANLEY, seventeen years old and pretty, is the kind of a girl who can best be described by one word --efficiency. She acts as a little mother to her brother and sister not only while they're awake, but during the night as well. Her father, James Shanley is employed at night, so Regina must also act as a guardian of the little home at 2860 Cedar street. Early this morning she saw a thin cloud of smoke streaming through the door. She donned her clothes quickly and found the hallway clogged with smoke. Groping her way through the clouds she reached the rooms of her sister and brother. They were half asleep and dazed. She carried them one at a time to the street and then told them the house was on fire. While a kind-hearted neighbor watched the children the little mother ran to the fire station at Clearfield street below Frankford avenue and told them of the fire. Fortunately the quick work of the firemen prevented the blaze from doing much damage. The fire was caused, it is believed, by mice chewing on matches. Traveling through the old-time estate of the Fishers, Carpenters, and Wisters, known as "Wakefield," east of Fisher's Lane station on the Germantown and Chestnut Hill branch of the Reading Railway, recently, Francis LYNCH, a young man of No. 2142 Grange street, East Germantown, came across a wrinkled letter, written in ink and in a fair condition of preservation. The communication was dated "Wakefield, 2d mo. 10th, 1850" and addressed to "My dear Brother," who was then living in California. The four-page letter was signed by "S. Lindley FISHER," who in the first part of the letter tells with much grief of the "sudden death or our dear sister, Sarah, who is no more, to comfort, counsel and direct. Dr. SHARPLESS attended her and was unwearied in his attentions. Her daughter, Elizabeth was with her at time of death. When Elizabeth said to her: 'Oh, ma, how hard it is to see thee suffer,' she replied, "We must have patience.' Later on she said 'Lord, I am ready.' Death soon followed and the funeral took place on Sixth Day afternoon. I had left my husband so indisposed that I did not feel easy to be longer away. Sally Ann ELLICOTT remained with them more than a week. Dear brother, all thy friends here think it will be very wrong for thee to run the risque of permanently injuring thy health by remaining in California. In returning home you will surely find a business that will be much more suitable for thee than gold digging. William WISTER is a good deal annoyed just now by being on the Grand Jury, of which they have made him foreman. Lindley came from Duncannon yesterday, arriving here about noon. The Pennsylvania Railroad Company has prohibited the running of cars on their road on First Day and he was obliged to come to Harrisburg in the wagon, which makes it very fatiguing - more than 100 miles by railroad and 22 on turnpike. We have not had a severe winter, but some very cold days. We did not fill our ice house with the first ice of the season and it looks very doubtful if we shall get any."
