POLICE AFFAIRS. -- Three medical students, named Hayede E. McKay, James R. Ellis and John J. Terres, were arraigned before Mayor Gilpin, yesterday morning, upon the charge of riot, and an aggra- vated assault and battery on Francis X. Kelley. From the testimo- ny, it appeared that the defendants called at the complainant's store, West Market street, and inquired the price of a trunk. They were answered $4.50, when one of the party alleged he could pur- chase the same for $2.25. Mr. Kelley expressed some doubts as to the correctness of the statement, and after some conversation, they left. In about half an hour they returned, an Mr. Kelley was called to the door, when, it is alleged, they knocked him down, and beat him in a shocking manner, with a cane and their fists. IMPOSITION. -- Many ladies of Spring Garden, have recently had their sympathies most cruelly taxed by a German woman, who usually makes her appearance just at twilight, with a very pitiful story, that the day before, when returning from her sister's funeral, she had her money stolen from her in the Columbia cars; that such is her own situation and that of her husband and family, she is obliged to reach Newark, N.J., that very night; that she only wants money to pay her passage, &c. As she has been telling the same story for at least a month past, and her imposition is now fully discovered, it is but proper to put others on their guard. No tax is so unjust and unwarrantable as that which is levied on our sympathies without cause. RECEPTION of the FIREMEN. -- The Manhattan Engine Company, of New York, reached this city about 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and were received in Broad street by an escort composed of the follow- ing companies: - Neptune Hose, Good Will Engine, Fair Mount En- gine, Washington Engine, Good Intent Hose, Franklin Hose, Weccacoc Hose, and Shiffler Hose. The visiting firemen are the guests of the Humane Hose, by whom they were handsomely entertained last evening with a bounteous supper. They will leave for home today. Dodsworth's Band accompanies the Manhattan. The PAYMENT of TAXES. -- The friends of the bill now before the Legislature authorizing the payment of Taxes, with a deduction of five percent, as gas bills are now paid, intend to circulate peti- tions for the signatures of our citizens, who will be called upon in a few days to sign them. The petitions, when full, may be left with Wm. Neal, No. 338 North Seventh street, or at the office of Andrew Miller, Fifth st., below Walnut. The NEW YORK MILITARY. -- Yesterday afternoon, the Washington Continental Guards, of New York, Capt. Darragh, arrived from Wash- ington city, with Adkins' Brass Band. The military were received at the Baltimore Railroad Depot by a deputation of the Continental Guards, Fletcher Grays and Independent Guards. The escort was accompanied by Bailey's Independent Band. OMMISSION. -- The name of Wm. Gibson was accidentally omitted from the list of graduates of the Pennsylvania College, published yes- terday. RICHMOND AFFAIRS. -- Inquest - On Sunday, the Coroner held an inquest on the body of an unknown white man, at J.P. Morris & Co.'s wharf. Some boatmen found the body on Saturday, at Petty's Island, opposite Richmond, and towed it over. IMPROVEMENT. -- Petitions are in circulation for grading and curb- ing Larch street, from William to Ann street. An object most deservedly to be wished for. FRANKFORD AFFAIRS. -- Hydrophobia. - Within the last few days our Borough has been in a state of excitement, from the large number of mad dogs which have been prowling around, biting every thing that happened to come in their way. Several children were reported to have been bitten, but on inquiry it turned out to be erroneous, except in one instance where a little girl, in Adams street, had one of her fingers very nearly bitten off, but whether the dog was rabid we are unable to say. The High Constable has been diligently employed in killing those dogs which have been bitten. BURGLARY. -- On Friday night the Coal office of A.G. Rorland & Co., situated at the lower end of Main street, was broken in to and robbed of $20 in pennies, and a new over coat. The next morning a ham, and several articles of kitchen furniture were found in the office, which the thieves had left behind. They had bee previously stolen from the kitchen of Mr. John Brigs, which is situated a short distance from the coal office. The majority of the boss Bricklayers and Plasterers have acceded to the demands of the journeymen. They asked an advance of twenty-five cents per day. CAMDEN AFFAIRS. -- Improvements on Broadway. - Broadway, in the vicinity of Cooper's Hill, is rapidly and handsomely improving. Absecom Railroad. - The Commissioners of this road met at Camden on Saturday; and, we learn, measures were adopted for the more rapid prosecution of the work. Large Funeral. - The funeral of John Ward, who was accidental- ly killed on the cars in coming from New York, on Saturday after- noon, took place yesterday, from the residence of his mother, in Plum street, Camden, accompanied by a large concourse of people and members of the different orders to which he belonged. * * * * * * * * * From "Public Ledger", Philadelphia, Wednesday, March 9, 1853; Vol. XXXIV.
