His advanced age makes his recovery doubtful. Yesterday the suffering of man and beast was intense throughout all sections of the city. Experienced police officers and hospital authorities state that they cannot recall a hot spell when so many prostrations from the heat were reported. It is occasion for remark, they say, that so few fatalities have resulted among so may cases of prostration. The highest temperature of the day was 102 degrees, according to the weather Bureau observations, and this was at 3:45 P. M. Humidity was not excessive, and for this reason the heat was more bearable than otherwise would have been the case. At 8 o'clock last evening the temperature was 96 degrees. The temperatures rose steadily from that hour onward and were successively 89, 95, 96,98, 99,100, 101, 102, 101, 100, 99, 96 degrees in the hours following. The highest temperature ever recorded before yesterday was 101.5 degrees on September 7, 1881.
