Obituary of James M. HESS:

"James M. Hess, 57, Gibsonwood Road, Catonsville, died Thursday [May 29, 1980] 
at the Loch Raven Veterans Administration Hospital.

He was born in Erie [Erie County, Pa] and graduated from Gannon College [Erie, 
Erie County, Pa].  He also studied at Case Western Reserve University.

He was retired from the U.S. Army and the Social Security Administration.  He 
began his career in the Army during World War II as an enlisted man.  He 
served aboard bombers in Europe and listened to the radio broadcasts of German 
flight controllers and pilots.

He returned to the army as an officer during the Korean conflict and served 10 
years abroad before being assigned to the Army Intelligence School at Fort 
Holabird.

His decorations included the Air Medal and the Army Commendation Medal.

Following his retirement as an Army intelligence officer in 1967, he served as 
a disability claims officer for Social Security.  He retired from that 
position last year.

He spoke several languages, including Russian, French and German.

Survivors include his widow, Adele C. Francis HESS; a son, Kevin A. HESS of 
Carlisle; three daughters, Jill E. HESS of Cannonsville; Karla A. COOK of 
Baltimore [Maryland]; and Lesley C. WOODS of Ontario, California; his mother, 
Mrs. James A. HESS of Baltimore [Maryland]; a sister, Dr. Marilyn E. Hess, of 
Philadelphia, and three grandchildren.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal 
Church, 4711 Edmondson Ave.  Local arrangements were made by A. Brugger & Sons 
Funeral Home, 449 E. 9th." [1]
