Porter's) mounted rifle regiment, died on Monday night from the effects of poison -- by whom administered is not known. We cannot too strongley express our regret and that felt by the entire rifle regiment at this occurrence. Sergeant Manly was one of the bravest and best soldiers in the army. At Cerro Gordo he received honorable mention for his gallantry, and also at Contreras. At Chapultepec he was the first man of Twiggs division to reach the heights beside his captain, and his hand raised the stars and stripes first on the national palace on the morning of the 14th September. He was a good soldier and an honest exemplary man. His residence was Philadelphia, his recruiting post Norfolk. Additional Comments: The Hannibal Journal was published at Hannibal, Marion County, Missouri. The battles were part of the Mexican-American War.
