H. Muller Succumbs at 63 U. of P. Professor Nationally Known in Analytical Chemistry Field Was Ill 3 Weeks Dr. John Hughes Muller, of Secane, Delaware County, professor of chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania since 1926, and for more than twenty-five years a member of the faculty, died at the Fitzgerald-Mercy Hospital yesterday following a three weeks' illness. He was 63. Nationally known in the analytical chemistry field, Dr. Muller recently developed an antiseptic, making use of the physiological properties of silver oxide, for the cure of pus-forming infections in men and animals. His discovery was heralded at the time "as most important" by medical men. Born in Philadelphia, Dr. Muller was graduated from the undergraduate school at the University in 1908, received his Master of Science degree the following year and in 1910 his Ph.D. In the latter year he was appointed instructor, and in 1919 promoted to an assistant professorship in the chemistry department. In 1926 he received his full professorship. A member of the American Chemical Society, he had been the recipient of honorary degrees from numerous colleges. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Anne Markland Muller, and by one sister, Mrs. Kenneth Chatman, of Sante Fe, N. M. Funeral services will be held from his home at 2 P.M. tomorrow. Burial will be made in the West Laurel Hill Cemetery.
