             "The Death Roll
             George Plumer Smith
Philadelphia Pa, Feby 14, (nothing to indicate year), George Plumer Smith, a 
wealthy retired Pgh merchant, died here yesterday.  Mr Smith was born at West 
Newton Pa May 22, 1815.  His father, James Smith, served in the War of 1812 & 
subsequently married the daughter of George Plumer who was elected to the 
Legislature of Penna & was a rep. in Congress from 1821 to 1827".  It then 
goes on to state that Geo Plumer Smith remained in West Newton until 1830 & 
then went to Pgh where 6 yrs later, he embarked in the wholesale dry goods 
business in firm of Hampton, Smith & Co.  In 1855, he made an extended trip to 
Europe & the East, Returning after a long absence, he shortly afterwards 
retired from business with an ample fortune.  When the War broke out, the 
quartermaster General found the supply of woolen army cloth for the equipment 
of 400,000 men called into the filed after Bull Run failing in delivery by the 
Contractors on the urgent suggestion of Gen McClellan, it was decided to send 
an agent to Europe to make purchases.  Mr Smith was designated for this 
mission by Pres Lincoln.  After his return from Europe, he resided in NY & 
Franklin Pa where he had valuable oil lands.  He removed in 1876 to Phila 
which he made his permanent home.  He was a charter member of the Union League 
& a member of the Historical Society of Penna.  The N.E. Historic Genealogical 
Sock of Boston, the Coldan [Golden?] Club of London etc & gave much time to 
the study of history & genealogy.  He was survived by two brothers, JC & AP 
Smith
