In 1840 he entered the United States Navy as a midshipman on the Constellation when the frigate made the first trip around the world. He was in due time promoted and retired as captain in 1872. He did sea service for eighteen years, shore and other duty for thirteen years, and lived retired twenty-three years. His estate is valued at a quarter of a million dollars. He married a daughter of the late Ellis Lewis, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. Note: Interred in Woodlands Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pa.
