We're alive Central High School, Ninety-five Rah! Rah! Rah! 4 INTRODUCTION Every class that ever graduated from any large high school or college undoubtedly intends at the time of graduation to keep up the old associations and plans with the best intentions for reunions in the years to come. Not all succeed. Even when they choose capable officers and organize efficient committees, the classes frequently fail to respond to the call for reunions during the first few years following graduation and those in charge desist from further effort. A few loyal spirits may gather at the fifth or tenth anniversary, but the Class as a whole does not participate. That, fortunately, has not been the experience of '95 C. H. S. Our Class acquired the reunion habit at the start and, although there were a few lean years in the first decade, we have never missed a reunion since we left the old school. Like others that have succeeded, we had to learn the rules of the game and at times we had to pay the price for our mistakes. Today, it is our proud boast as a class of 82 graduates, that although we had only 28 present at our Fifth Reunion, the number rose to 41 at the Tenth, 58 at the Fifteenth, 87 at the Twentieth, 82 at the Twenty-fifth, and 63 at the Thirtieth. During the intervening years we now have an average attendance of over 40. Not so bad for a class that has been out of school for an entire generation and is now discussing the admirable qualities of its grandchildren, if any. One of the outstanding reasons for our success was the welcoming to our reunions of the fellows 5 who had not completed the course with us. Each year, as we progressed from the innocence of Freshmen to the sophistication of Sophomores, the dignity of juniors and the conscious superiority of Seniors, we saw one after another of our dear schoolmates fall by the wayside. Some left voluntarily for personal or family reasons. Others were unable to maintain the pace set for us by the vigilant Faculty. A few had such frequent occasions to visit Room 1 for an interview with the President, that they took the hint and withdrew from the ranks before they got a formal request to do so. Whatever the reason, those classmates were made to feel that they were as much a part of '95 as the rest of us and many of them have been among the most faithful members in the group. Another reason for our success was the choice of a set evening each year - the first Friday in March - for our reunions. That decision came relatively late, after many years of experiment with dates scattered widely over the calendar. We began with March in 1896 and tried all the months from January to May, as well as one poorly attended reunion in November. After 1903 every reunion except one was either in February or in March. In that year we decided in favor of a Friday evening and never departed from that tradition. In 1914 we definitely established the policy of meeting on the first Friday in March. It is interesting to note that the Graduation Banquet, the First and Tenth Reunions were held at the Colonnade, three reunions at the Continental, two at the Rittenhouse and at the Majestic, one each at Kugler's and at the Bourse. Four reunions 6 were held at the Manufacturers' Club, five at Boothby's and six at the Walton. The last nine reunions have been held at the Franklin Inn Club. For many years the Class was singularly fortunate in not having to record a single name on the In Memoriam Roll. Since the publication of our Thirtieth Year Book, however, and particularly in the past year, we have lost some of our most popular associates. It is with great regret that we add to the In Memoriam Roll the names of Thomas F. Dooner, William C. Fleck, Howard D. Geisler, Arthur L. Hanna, Fred S. Hoese, John C. Shengle, and Charles H. Taylor. Their names will recall to all of us many happy associations in the past. It is fitting that we dedicate to their memory this Thirty-fifth Year Book of the One Hundredth Class. 7 ROLL OF THE CLASS EDWIN M. Five years later, when the Twenty-five Year Book appeared, the number had dwindled to seven. Those seven who survived the trials and tribulations of a quarter century since our school days were Dr. Thompson and Professors Snyder, Gray, Ben Lacy, Belknap, Maas and Neufeld. Another five years have passed and have cut heavily into that little group of survivors. Today only one teacher is left - Philip Maas - who was active in our undergraduate days. As for the others, Dr. Thompson died in October, 1924, at the age of eighty. After his retirement from the Presidency in 1920, he continued at school as Barnwell Lecturer in Ethics, until ill-health compelled him to discontinue active work about three years later. Professor Snyder retired from active teaching in 1920, and soon after became associated for some time with the Victor Talking Machine Company, in Camden. He is still in excellent health and active in scientific research. Professor Gray was made Principal of the William Penn High School in 1920, and continues to do notable work in that important executive position. Ben Lacy took up Dr. Thompson's work in Ethics after the latter's illness, but he survived Dr. Thompson by little over two months, dying after a short illness in 37 December, 1924. Harry Belknap likewise died in 1924. He had been seriously ill for about a year. Julius Neufeld became Head of the Department of Mathematics in 1920, and continued in that position until his death in 1923. Thus Phil Maas is the only survivor of the seven who remained in 1920. Of the teachers no longer connected with C. H. S., but still living in 1920, nearly all have survived during the intervening period. Professor Willis is still seriously ill and living privately. Professors Berger and Graham are Department Heads at Germantown High School; Professor Schnabel holds a similar position at Northeast High School and is Principal of the Northeast Summer High School. Dr. Spaeth continues at Princeton and is well known generally as a lecturer on literary subjects. Dr. Dolley is in business in the Bahamas and the West Indies. Chester Nye Farr is practicing law in Philadelphia and was recently appointed (1929) to membership in the Board of Public Education. Lightfoot spends his summers in New Hampshire and his winters in Florida. The only death among the teachers no longer at C. H. S., was that of Dr. Keller, Principal of the Germantown High School. He died in 1924. As a matter of record, our other teachers died in the years appended to their names: Stuart (1898); Bartine (1906); Smyth (1907); Holt (1908); Christine (1910); Miller (1912); Cliff (1912); Hopper (1913); Houston (1914); Straube (1915); Ernest Lacy (1916); Carter (1917); Greene (1918); Dubois (1918); and Schock (1920). 38 The little group of teachers that taught us in the old days compares with a Faculty of 142 members in 1925 and of 114 at the present time. Several departments, such as Languages, Mathematics, Science and English, were in recent years, as large as the entire Faculty of 1891. Our own beloved John L. Haney, who had been Professor of English Philology till 1916, and Head of the English Department (1916-1920) succeeded Dr. Thompson as President of the School in 1920, and is still active in that capacity. If he never does anything else, he abolished the Discipline Committee. Our own Milton Wise, has over a quarter century to his credit as a Professor of History in the old School. No other members of '95 have as yet been added to the Faculty, but Haney and Wise are ready to welcome the grandsons of '95 men as soon as the youngsters come along. 39 HISTORY OF THE CLASS The Class of 1895 entered the portals of Central High School in June, 1891, 316 strong, becoming the 100th Class, although more frequently known as '95 C. H. S. Of the 316, some early fell by the wayside, some stayed for partial two-year certificates, 82 were graduated in June, 1895 with degrees and a few remained to shed their lustre on the following class. At the graduation, the First Honor Man of the Class was John Louis Haney and the Second Honor Man was Horace Stern. More of them anon. '95 immediately started into do great things. First of all we published our graduation Record several years after the Class Day, after trials and financial tribulations that would have daunted a less sturdy organization, and Lutkin was the mighty force that engineered this publication, what a wonderful Record it was. We fully agreed that we could never print a better one, but how little did we know the genius that lay dormant in Ned Schoch, and what magnificent records he was to bring forth, ending with our Twenty-five Year Book, which is truly a masterpiece of record making. We early decided to hold a reunion each year, and accordingly we have had a reunion and banquet annually. Some of these reunions have been historic affairs. There was the Twenty-first Reunion, which was our birth-day party, with Ned Schoch in the role of the presenter, as at Class Day, handing out gifts to the various members of the Class. Then who can ever forget the Twenty-sixth Reunion? That night fell on the 4th of March, when President Harding was inaugurated. A short time prior thereto, our own John L. Haney had been elected President of the Central High School, Rowe Stewart had been elected President of the Advertising Clubs of the World, and Horace Stern had been elected a judge of the Court of Common Pleas No. 2, of Philadelphia County. Thus Haney and Stern had amply vindicated their selection as Honor Men of the Class. Taking the inauguration as our cue, we also inaugurated our two presidents and installed our judge of Common Pleas Court No. 2. 40 Through the ingenuity, ability and resourcefulness of Ned Schoch, we were enabled to obtain several columns of a first page news article in the Philadelphia Record, dealing with this reunion. At the instance of Walter Herzberg, the Class in 1916 subscribed $400.00, the interest thereon to be used for the donation of an annual gold medal to be given to the Senior making the best record in English Philology, and to be known as the "JOHN L. HANEY PHILOLOGY MEDAL." This fund is at present invested in Liberty Bonds. Beginning with January, 1929, the Philology Medal has been awarded semi-annually. The Class bas also contributed to various activities connected with the School. When the Great War broke out, the Class very naturally responded liberally with its men and its talents. We sent overseas at least seven members of the Class, five of whom saw active service along the Front, and three of whom returned as Lieutenant-Colonels. There were eleven others who enlisted and served their country in various capacities and rank, from Lieutenant to Major. Since 1914 the Class has met regularly on the first Friday of March in each year, thus establishing a permanent date for our reunions, a feature which might well be copied by every class. Take it all in all, we shall never look upon such a Class again. 41 "The Class will come to order" CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL (The Old Building) 3.30 o'clock Friday, March 7th, 1930 TEACHER PROF. PHILIP MAAS (The only present active member of the Faculty who was teaching at C. H. S. when we were boys there.) All members of the Class are expected to answer the Professor's questions according to the best of their ability, if any. 43 "So say we all of us" I resolve: Never to miss another re-union of '95 C. H. S. 45 Don't forget the date Our next re-union Friday, March 6th, 1931 47 ~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~
