I Joseph Coulton of the township of Blockley in the County of Philadelphia in 
Pennsylvania Weaver being weak in Body but of sound and perfect Mind and 
Memory considering the Uncertainty of death and the uncertainty of the time 
thereof do think of while strength and Ability afforded to faith such Temporal 
affairs as it hath pleased providence to bless me with which I do in manner 
following [viz- Infrimes] This my Will and I do order that all my just debts 
and funeral Expenses be fully paid and satisfied by my Executors herein after 
named as soon as conveniently may be after my decease.  Item I give and devise 
unto my dear and loving wife Mary all my Estate Real and personal untill my 
Children Hannah Sarah William and Lydia or the Survivors of them (if any 
should die in their Minority) arrive to the following Ages the Daughters to 
the age of Eighteen and the Son to the age of twenty one years On condition 
that my said wife Mary do provide in the best manner she is capable for the 
support and Maintenance of my said Children provided Nevertheless and it is my 
Mind and will that if my said Wife should intermarry during my said Children’s 
Minority that then she shall be intitled to her Right of Dower only and the 
care of my said Children shall devolve upon my Executors herein after named.  
I also give and bequeath unto my said Wife (after my said Sons arrive to the 
age of twenty one years) One equal [Moiety] of the profit of my Real Estate 
during her widowhood.  Also a Room in my house of her own choice during the 
same Term.  Item I give and devise to my said son William all my Real Estate 
whatsoever and wheresoever when arrives to the age of twenty one years To hold 
to him my said Son William his Heirs and Assigns forever On condition that he 
pay to my Daughters or the Survivors of them the sum of fifty pounds to each 
of them within one year after my said Son arrives to the age of twenty one 
years.  And under the subject to his Mother’s privileges during her widowhood 
or Right of Dower And as for and concerning all the rest and Residue of my 
Estate I give and bequeath the same to my said Wife Mary and Son William to be 
equally divided between them when he arrives to the age of twenty one years.  
Item it is my will that if my said Son should die in his Minority unmarried 
and without Issue that my said Real Estate shall be equally divided between my 
said Daughters or the survivors of them To hold to them my said Daughters or 
the survivors of them their Heirs and Assigns forever subject to their 
Mother’s privileges or right of Dower as aforesaid. Lastly I do hereby 
Nominate Constitute & Appoint my Father in Law Edward Williams and my Brother 
in Law Isaac Warner to be Executors of this my last Will and Testament In 
Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this fourth day of 
February Anno Domoni 1781 Joseph Coulton Signed Sealed published pronounced 
and declared by the said Joseph Coulton as and for his last Will and Testament 
in Presence of us James Worrill Peter Worrill Letters. Philadelphia March 
15.1782. Personally appeared James Worrill Peter Worrill two of the Witnesses 
to the foregoing will [who…] depose and say that they were present and saw and 
heard Joseph Coulton the Testator in the said Will named sign publish 
pronounce and declare the said writing to be his last Will and Testament and 
at the the same time he was of sound disposing Mind Memory and Understanding 
to the best of their Knowledge and Belief. Cosign John Gill D. Reg.  Be it 
Remembered that on the 13th day of March 1782 The last Will and Testament of 
Joseph Coulton was proved and probated and Letters Testamentary granted 
thereon to Edward Williams and Isaac Warner Executors therein named they 
having been first affirmed truly to perform the same exhibit a true Inventory 
thereof and render a just and true account where thereunto lawfully 
required!
