DIBBLE, aged 51 years, resident of Prentiss Vale, McKean Co, PA; claimed pension due to deafness-hearing lost during battle near Suffolk, VA Jan 8, 1862 and battle of Cedar Creek, Shenandoah Co, VA Oct 19, 1864; stated that he was taken prisoner Oct 28, 1864 and was taken to Richmond, VA; that he was paroled Feb 15, 1865; that since leaving the service he has resided at Allegany Co, NY and his occupation is farming. Feb 13, 1883--LEWIS W. DIBBLE, McKean Co, PA; stated that for 12 years prior to his enlistment, his place of residence was Scio, Allegany Co, NY; that since his discharge he has lived two years at Scio, NY, ten years at East Hebron, Potter Co, PA, and five years at Prentiss Vale, McKean Co, PA; "My hearing was first affected at battle near Suffolk, Va., on or about May 8th, 1862, my regiment there being in support of a battery, which was aggravated in every battle I was after in and has increased ever since, till I am now very deaf"; stated that he was treated in field hospital at Suffolk, VA for about two weeks in May 1863, then in general hospital St. Paul's Church, Alexandria, VA from Oct 1863 to Apr or May 1864, then in May 1864 transferred to general hospital Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, PA, then sent to Camp Stoneman near Washington, then joined his regiment in Shenandoah Valley near Cedar Creek. Nov 13, 1883--War Department, Adjutant General's office, prisoner of war records show LEWIS W. DIBBLE captured at Middletown, VA Oct 28, 1864, brought from Staunton, VA and confined at Richmond, VA Nov 4, 1864, paroled at Richmond, VA Feb 15, 1865, reported at Camp Parole, MD Feb 19, 1865, furloughed Mar 15, 1865 for 30 days, ordered to report to Elmira, NY May 25, 1865 while on furlough. May 13, 1889-- LEWIS W. DIBBLE, aged 58 years, P.O. Bells Run, McKean Co, PA; described how he became deaf while "I stood very near one of the guns during the cannonading." May 13, 1889--AMOS DIBBLE, aged 49 years, resident of Eldred Twp, McKean Co, PA; stated that he has known the claimant since his earliest boyhood. Jul 14, 1890--LEWIS W. DIBBLE, aged 59 years, resident of Pleasant Valley, Potter Co, PA; declaration for pension; witnesses LEVI B. HOLCOMB, resident of Pleasant Valley, PA and P.B. WOODARD, resident of Shinglehouse, PA. Dec 11, 1890--LEWIS W. DIBBLE, Potter Co, PA; restated hospitalizations during service. Apr [illegible] 1891--Letter from ALBERT D. AMES, Co I 1st NY Dragoons, in his own hand, to Commissioner of Pensions; acknowledged letter from Commissioner of Pensions of Feb 10, 1891; "I delayed writing on the account of sickness in my family with measles and scarlet fever"; stated that LEWIS DIBBLE had normal hearing when they met in the fall of 1862; "Mr. Dibble...was a sociable friendly man I took quite a notion to him...Our regiment went into the shenandoah valley in October 64 before the burning in the valley. A few days before the burning we had some heavy artilery firing the second day after the cannonading I think I met Mr. Dibble and talked with him and had to talk very loud to make him understand what I said he was quite deaf. A few days after the burning in the valley he was taken prisoner buy did not speak with him. I saw Mr. Dibble when a detail was made to go foraging the day he was taken prisoner. The next time I saw Mr. Dibble was about 13 years ago I was riding along the road in the town of Hebron, Pa. a horseback and saw Mr. L.W. DIBBLE two or three rods from the road. I spoke to him very loud he looked around. I undertook to talk with him. I spoke very loud he did not understand what I said and I rode on as it was most night. The next time I saw him was about four years ago the first of July last was at his house in Hebron. Eat dinner with Mr. Dibble was there about one hour. Had to talk very loud to make him understand what I said he was very deaf for the last year and a half I have seen Mr. Dibble a number of times talked with him have to talk very loud to make him understand what I sayed. WILBER, aged 53 years, both residents of Oswayo, Potter Co, PA; stated that they were present at the burial of LEWIS W. DIBBLE at Oswayo, PA on Aug 30, 1891. Nov 28, 1891--JOHN S. BROWN, aged 38 years, resident of Greenwood, Steuben Co, NY; stated that he is a minister of the gospel; that on Mar 17, 1891 he married LEWIS W. DIBBLE and LYDIA S. DIBBLE at Ceres, Allegany Co, NY. Jun 15, 1892--WILBUR SLAUGHTER, aged 41 years, and ADA SLAUGHTER, aged 32 years, both residents of Allegany, Potter Co, PA, P.O. Andrews Settlement; stated that the former wife of LEWIS W. DIBBLE died at Bells Run, Potter Co, PA on Aug 11, 1888 and was buried on Aug 13, 1888 and that they were present at her burial Nov 30, 1892--SAMUEL SMITH, aged 47 years, and JENNIE E. SMITH, aged 47 years, both residents of Oswayo, Potter Co, PA; stated that they have known LYDIA S. DIBBLE for the past years; that for the past three years they have lived in the same house with her; that her former husband, Major R. Dibble, died at Oswayo, PA on Jan 16, 1890; that they were present at his death and burial and were living in the same house with LYDIA S. DIBBLE at the time. Apr 22, 1922--BESSIE L. NELSON, aged 37 years, resident of Oswayo, PA; application for reimbursement for last expenses of LYDIA S. DIBBLE, who died Mar 27, 1922 at Oswayo, PA and was buried at Hollenbeck Cemetery, Hebron Twp, Potter Co, PA; persons who rendered service as nurse--ADA SLAUGHTER, EARL NELSON and wife. Dec 6, 1922--BESSIE L. NELSON, letter to Pension Office; "My bill for caring for my grandmother (Mrs. Dibble) was the amt. of pension due her ($90) which was all the compensation I received during the four years I cared for her she being a cripple caused by a fall. It lacked considerable of being enough to pay expenses. Respectfully yours, Bessie L. Nelson." --End--
