Turn right at second road, Shober Street. Procede to top of hill, new Llewellyn two-story brick school on right. On the left beside a small white church is the entrance to the fenced cemetery. Inside the fence, is the "old" church/school built in 1839, and the adjoining cemetery.. When these tombstone inscriptions were recorded in November 1996, the small cemetery had been freshly cleaned by the Branch Township Board of Supervisors. Since the date of the original survey, additions to this list were made for recent burials. At this time, there are no official existing plot records. Llewellyn Cemetery History The Llewellyn Cemetery is bordered by a frame church structure that is no longer in use. An oral history by Howard Adams of Llewellyn containing writings by Annie Bressler, (Born 10/28/1873, Died April 11, 1935) former school teacher in Llewellyn, and daughter of W.H. Bressler provided the following information. "The church school built in 1839 by W.H. Bressler was the second school in Llewellyn. The school was 32 feet long and 22 feet wide, built by lumber from trees after clearning of this land by towns people. Edward Holt was the first teacher. The building was used for Reformed Sunday School and later for Reformed Church. The building is no longer used and still standing and well maintained. Edward Holt built a home southeast of the church.." (Source: Annie Bressler) This home later became the residence of George Shuler, and Savannah nee Solt, his wife. The home is no longer standing. In years past, through the 1940's school children paraded around town on Memorial Day, and then while boys placed flags, girls placed geraniums on every veteran_s grave. In addition, a ceremony was held in the cemetery, where a platform decorated with bunting was used for those dignataries making speeches. (Source: Harold L. Pinkerton, Sr. Aug. 1998) TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTIONS Following each tombstone inscription, is a Section and Lot descriptor, matching the attached plot grid. Lester Pinkerton recalls that in his childhood (1920's) numerous tombstones stood in the south-west corner of the Llewellyn Cemetery. There are no tombstones currently observed in that section of the cemetery GRID DISCRIPTORS: Running east to west, divided by the grass walkway are Sections A and B. Section B adjoins the frame church/school within the cemetery fence on its eastern border, and the playground on its northern side. Section A is bordered by the east corner of the fence and the alley (20ft wide) now known as Clay Street. Plot numbers are sequential beginning at the eastern end, and increase as they progress toward the west. The main gate is adjacent to the old church/school. This manuscript was prepared by Dr. Sharon Pinkerton Wayland, 8-14-1998, in support of her father's love of Schuylkill County Geneology.
