Co., PA “Schuylkill Roots” Researchers........ Page 7: The year 1822 was one of stark tragedy. Where burials had been recorded at an average of from six to ten per year, a total of 52 are recorded for 1822, with 48 between June 27 and September 13, the months of the year when the death rate ordinarily is at its lowest. All but four of these were children. It is quite apparent that a severe epidemic swept through the community. In the year 1809 the Consistory of this congregation consisted of the following: REFORMED LUTHERAN Elders: Abraham BERTOLET Elders: Jacob SCHOLL Conrad RODER Conrad SCHWENK Deacons: Johann LOOS Deacons: Georg REBER Peter MAYER Abraham HILBERT CHURCH BOOK & ACCOUNTS OF THE LUTHERAN AND REFORMED CONGREGATIONS This agreement is made the 1st of March in the year Seventeen hundred and eighty two. As we intend to erect a House of Worship jointly, all those Lutherans and Reformed here at this place adjacent to Peter LINGEFELTER and Nichlausz STALLER, it is understood between the two congregations that neither congregation shall have anything to say against the other in regard to a pastor; if the Lutheran congregation has one and the Reformed one then they shall not come at the same time or day, the other party shall first be consulted-also, there shall be no altar or (communion) table prepared that is not open to the (other) half. Two deacons shall be chosen every two years and they shall keep two accounts. One party shall have as much right as the other and if there is a dispute, then the Lutheran and Reformed men shall endeavor to bring it to a close; neither Justice or Court shall have anything to do with it. Thus we subscribe ourselves-all those who met at Nichlausz STALLER’s house yesterday. This is an abridged copy as I do not recall all the names-but all those who contributed toward it I can in truth name accurately, and they are the following, namely: April 15, 1816. A correct copy of the list to settle the debt on the church land: those who paid toward it: Johannes REBER, Jr. $3.00 Georg REBER 2.00 Abraham REBER 1.00 Adam REBER .50 Peter STALLER, Jr. 1.00 Jacob REBER 2.00 Conrath RODER 3.00 Nicklausz STALLER 1.00 Andreas STALLER 1.00 Philip WERT 2.00 Conrath RODER, Jr. 1.00 Johannes REBER, Sr 1.00 EARLY TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTIONS AT SUMMER HILL This compilation was done in excess of 50 years ago by C W UNGER & William H DIETRICH Old section; east end.
