CARL 1888 Sacramento, PA Some corrections to grammar and parenthesis behind some words were made to the original document. Sunday January 1, 1888 Last night it was snowing and then it commenced to rain and rained all day. So with the snow on the ground it was very sloppy. In the afternoon, I took a sleigh ride down to Joel Daniel’s taking Jno(John) A Wiest and family down for which I received fifty cents. It is raining still and I think the snow is going away At home Monday January 2, 1888 This morning I got up at 1 o’clock to go to Tremont. It was just starting to clear up and was very cold in the forenoon then. In Tremont, I made application for a new post office at our store and a mail route between Sacramento and Klingerstown. When I went home, two girls went with me from Donaldson to Israel Nyes. Came home just when it was getting dark. At home Tuesday January 3, 1888 Nothing of importance happened today. The weather was very fine in the forenoon with a small snowstorm in the afternoon. I repaired a clock for S. P. Schwalm for which I received fifty cents. At home Wednesday January 4, 1888 We had very fine weather today. But I think we are going to have snow by tomorrow. My wife went down to D. Laudenslagers yesterday and I had to sleep alone. And I think I have to do the same tonight because she is not home yet. I got a bottle of rubber cement and mended one of my boots but I don’t think it will hold. At home Thursday January 5, 1888 We had very fine weather today. It was not cold . Last night I was up at Sacramento fetching the mail. I got a whole lot of catalogues and the petition for a new post office and have it signed by 17 signers already. My knees are hurting me because yesterday I wanted to skate on the ground and nearly broke them by turning a double summersault and landing on my hands and knees Yours truly W. F. Carl My wife came home today again Friday January 6, 1888 It was raining nearly all day. So nothing of importance happened. I selected a showcase out of a catalogue, which I wanted to buy. The price is $18.00. I received a whole lot of new catalogues of jewelry lately. I got some more signers for my petition today. I think we will get a Post Office without fail. At Home Saturday January 7, 1888 Today it was raining nearly all day. I was out in Klingers getting signers for my petition. I have 66 in all now. This evening we got our baby baptized. We called it Harvey Franklin C. I just finished a letter, which is to go for two new shuttles-one for Mrs. Mary Hoffman and one for Mr. Jno Miller my father in law. My wife is very cross tonight. I think I am going to have a whipping At Home Sunday January 8, 1888 Weather was sultry. I was in Sunday school this forenoon and at home this afternoon. Tomorrow I must go on Market again. I think I am going with the wagon because the ice + snow is almost all gone. At Home Monday January 9, 1888 I started this morning at 3 o’clock. It was getting colder and on the state road was nothing but ice. I came home when it was getting dark. I broke an axle at my wagon and was afraid I would break down entirely before I came home. I also sent for a showcase. And I sent the petition for a Post Office to the Post Office Department. At Home In the evening it was snowing again. Tuesday January 10, 1888 It was snowing till almost daylight this morning. When it stopped and the weather was very fine but this evening it is getting much colder and the wind is blowing hard. I made a case spring in J Klinger’s watch for which I received 40 cents. I sent the wagon to the B.S.(blacksmith) shop to get the axle made which I broke yesterday. At Home Wednesday January 11, 1888 It was cold today. I didn’t do much. I made a new drawer for my tools with a lock on. Char Hoffman brought back the revolver again which he bought a few weeks ago. I am sleepy. I wish it was time to go to bed. At home Thursday January 12, 1888 The weather was fine but cold. I believe we are going to have snow before tomorrow morning. I fetched a load of logs above the(Labes) Fields almost on top of the mountain. I think I am going for the mail yet. I was up at Sacramento for the mail. I came home at 9 o’clock at about 10 it began snowing. At Home Friday January 13, 1888 This morning there was about 5 inches of snow on the ground and it was snowing like everything yet. But soon it began raining and rained till about 12 o’clock. In the forenoon, I fetched the wagon from the B.S. shop and this afternoon I fetched a load of coals with the sled. It is looking very much like rain again and I think it will rain before tomorrow morning. At Home Saturday January 14,1888 The weather was very fine today. A little foggy in the morning. I cleaned a watch for Andrew Shade. We began filling our icehouse from the fish dam. We got it about half full. I received from J.A.F. Laudenslager.($12) My wife went to church tonight. She wants to go home tomorrow. I don’t want to let her go but I guess she is going. I received those shuttles, which I ordered last Saturday. At Home Sunday January 15, 1888 This morning it was raining. I was not in Sunday school on account of the rain. In the afternoon, I paid a visit to J.S. Klingers. In the evening, it was very foggy. We had chicken and beans for supper. At Home My wife didn’t go home on account of the rain & baby’s cold. Monday January 16, 1888 This morning when I got up to go to market it was very cold. They told me in Tremont it was the coldest day we had this winter. I left at home at 3 o’clock and forgot my change but was fortunate enough to have some of my own with me. I received my showcase today. It is a splendid ne. We put velvet in the bottom of it this evening yet. I came home a little before sundown. It was cold yet and looked much like snow. At Home Tuesday January 17, 1888 This morning it was very cold. It began snowing at about 8 o’clock. I fixed up my showcase today. I am well pleased with it. I sent for the daily North American on Saturday and expected a copy tonight but failed to get one. It is snowing still. At Home Wednesday January 18, 1888 It was cold today and cloudy with small snowstorms. I took my wife home today. Tonight we took one of our ponies and D. Carl’s small sled and went over to Springville and from there to Sacramento for the mail. I received the first copy of the North American. Tomorrow I am going to take S.K. Carl to Fred Schwalm. At Home Thursday January 19, 1888 It was very cold again. I was up at Sacramento again. Mr. Henry Kutz came here yesterday. He is still here. I don’t know how long he wants to stay. I was disappointed with S.K. Carl. He didn’t come to be taken to Fred Schwalms. At Home Friday January 20, 1888 It was very cold today. I made a spring in Albert Harner’s watch. We put some more ice in the icehouse. On Sunday, I am going down to Gratz with D.E. Carl’s sled if the weather is favorable. I think I will take my wife along. H.F.Kutz left tonight. Tomorrow is payday. I must go to Springville in the evening. At Home Saturday January 21, 1888 Today it was pretty cold. I made out an order to send for watches etc on Monday. Tonight I was over in Springville & up at Sacramento for money because we had payday. Tomorrow I am going down to Gratztown. I paid those $12.00 dollars back, which I had from J.A.F. Laudenslager. At Home Sunday January 22, 1888 It was very cold today. I sent the boys up this morning for Daniel E. Carl’s cutter sled. Then I went over to Springville and when I came back I went down to Jno Millers. From there, my wife and I went down to Wm. Etzwiler below Gratz town. At Home Monday January 23, 1888 This morning was the coldest morning we had this winter. I left home for market at 4 o’clock and nearly froze. I came home a little before dark. It was snowing a little. At Home Tuesday January 24, 1888 It was very cold this morning. It didn’t snow any more. I got a very bad cold yesterday. The worst I had this winter. I wanted to go to Springville with store goods but on account of my cold, I send the boys. In the afternoon I was feeling better and went skating. I was down at Jno Wiblichs where I fell. Then I returned. At Home Wednesday January 25, 1888 This morning it was cold still. I didn’t leave the house on account of my cold. It is snowing fiercely. It commenced at about 3 o’clock. At Home Thursday January 26, 1888 It was very cold this morning. It stopped snowing some time last night and now it is blowing the snow like everything. I didn’t go out of the house much. My cold is better. I have a pimple at my nose that hurts me. I think the watches I ordered are down in Tremont. I ordered D. Hoffman to bring them along for me. At Home Friday January 27, 1888 This morning it was cold and still drifting the snow. Nearly all the crossroads are blockaded with snow. This afternoon D.E. Carl, Chas Coleman, Andrew Shade, J.A. Wiest, a young man named Workman and I were at Daniel Artz Vendue(sale). We went around by Springville and had to go through the fields about half of the way. Mr. Shade got pretty full. We had to laugh at him. At Home Saturday January 28, 1888 It was awful cold and windy today and still drifting the snow. I fetched a load of coals this forenoon and nearly froze my face. I had to go through snow banks and everything. Calvin was with me. He was nearly froze too. There was an eclipse of the moon between the hours of six and seven. It covered the whole moon. Tonight I received my watches, which I ordered last Monday. I am perfectly satisfied with every one of them. At Home Monday January 30, 1888 Today it was not as cold as it was last week. I left home at 4 o’clock for Tremont. When I was coming home, it was raining a little. I came home at about 4 o’clock. Tuesday January 31, 1888 This morning it was raining a little. In the evening, D.E. Carl and I went over to Springville. From there to Sacramento for the mail. We came home about two o’clock in the morning. It was clearing up at the time. At Home Wednesday February 1, 1888 This morning was a little cooler. I was sleepy when I got up. We were putting ice in the icehouse again. I am very tired this evening. My flesh and bones ache all over. Tomorrow D.E. Artz is moving. I think I will take a load over for him. We are expecting fun tomorrow. I can tell more about it. The boys are off for the mail. I won’t go to bed before they are here. At Home Thursday February 2, 1888 It was very nice and warm today. I left at home at 6 o’clock to help D.E.Artz to move. In going over, we went around by Good Spring & Keffers and came over about 12 o’clock. Clara Schmeltz went with me & back again. In coming home, we crossed the mountain at Tower City station. We came to Rombergers about 5 o’clock. Prof. Gallegher & a violin player came there with the stage. There was lots of fun there. I came home about 8 o’clock. D.E. Carl got pretty full. At Home Friday February 3, 1888 We had fair weather in the forenoon but it was looking like rain in the evening. I was at home all day. A jockey went through here with 9 horses to sell. At Home Saturday February 4, 1888 This morning it was snowing and raining. I sent the boys for a load of coals. Tomorrow we are expecting visitors from Tremont. I must take my wife home tomorrow too. It is raining still. I think the snow is all gone away. At Home Sunday February 5, 1888 This morning it was very fogy. Our visitors came at about 11 o’clock. They were Bill Hoff and family and Mrs. Bensinger and Samuel Bensinger. D. Laudenslager & family were here too. Those from Tremont left at about 4 o’clock. At about 2 o’clock I went to take Lizzie home. Laudenslager went with me. Sleighing was very bad. We came home a little before dark. It was raining and later it began snowing. At Home Monday February 6, 1888 This morning when I got up at about 2 o’clock it was just clearing up. I started at about half past 3 and came to Donaldson at about 7. The reading strikers all asked me whether I was from Pine Valley. I told some I was from Lykens Valley and others …….I was . I came home at about 5 o’clock. At Home Tuesday February 7, 1888 This morning it was snowing. I didn’t do much except reading stories. A spring was broken in one of my new watches. I made that one. It is snowing still and was snowing all day. At Home Wednesday February 8 1888 This morning it was snowing in the forenoon. I was at home all alone. Some of the others were at school while the others were at the funeral of Ruben Shade’s blind boy. In the afternoon it stopped snowing, cleared up, and was very fine the rest of the day. I was down in Gratz town for the doctor for Koppenhaver's child, which had the croup. On the way, home I stopped to see my wife. It is getting colder. At Home Thursday February 9, 1888 Today it was very cold. At noon, it commenced to thaw a little. I cleaned a watch for S.F.Carl. One of Israel Carl's sons and a young man by the name of Heckert came here this morning. They wanted to stay till tomorrow morning. Monroe Schwalm & Fremont Bartho went for the mail. I am waiting till they are coming, then I will read the paper, and then go to bed. At Home Friday February 10, 1888 Today it was very cold. I nearly froze while in bed. Our visitors left us this morning. It began snowing at about noon and is snowing still. I have a kind of a sore eye. I do not know what's the matter. I think M.E. Schwalm is bringing the mail. I am waiting for it. Saturday February 11, 1888 This morning it was snowing yet and it snowed till late in the afternoon. The Rice boys and girls came down from Gordon. They are going home tomorrow. In the evening, William Rice and I took a ride up to Valley View. On the home road, we upset and the horse nearly ran away from us. We broke one of the shafts of the sled. At Home Sunday February 12, 1888 This morning it was cold but got nice and warm in the afternoon. Our visitors left us right after dinner. And we went to the funeral of Henry Bartho's child. It began snowing in the afternoon and snowed till 10 o’clock. At Home Monday February 13, 1888 It was pretty cold this morning. I left at home at 3 o’clock for market. I came home at 3 o’clock. I didn’t have many things along. At Home Tuesday February 14, 1888 This morning it was pretty cold again. I left at home for a load of coal but didn’t get any. In the afternoon, I fixed Calvin's watch. At Home Wednesday February 15, 1888 It was very cold this morning. I had a very bad headache today. I believe it will be very cold tonight. D. Williams looked at my watches. He wants to buy one of them. At Home Thursday February 16, 1888 It was cold this morning again. But got warmer in the afternoon. I was down on the ice skating this forenoon. Geo. Hoffman's vendue(sale) was today. If the snow will keep, we are going up to Gordon next Saturday a week. But sleighing is bad now. And if it doesn’t give any snow, I think we can’t go. At Home Friday February 17, 1888 The weather was fair today. The snow is melting. I think it is all going away. Calvin and I were over at Wetzel's school tonight. It was pretty good. At Home Saturday February 18, 1888 This morning it was looking as if it was going to snow but cleared up towards noon. This evening, I was over in Springville to collect money. When I went home, I went by the exhibition again. I sold my gold watch to Daniel Williams for $21.00 and another watch. I came home at about half past eleven o’clock. At Home Sunday February 19, 1888 Today it was nice and warm. It was about 12 o’clock when I went to bed. At half past two, I had to get up again to go for the doctor for Mrs. D. Herb. They got a little boy. After I came back, I didn’t get to bed any more. I was very sleepy the whole day. I was down seeing my wife. Mother and D. Laudenslager & Family were along. Nearly all the snow, that was left, went away today. I am going to market with the wagon tomorrow. Monday February 20, 1888 This morning it began to rain just when I was getting ready to go to market and it was raining the whole day. I came back at 6 o’clock. Samuel Straub &Preston Klinger had the sleds and the snow was all gone. They wished they had the wagons. One of my horses fell and cut himself a little. At Home It is raining a little still. Tuesday February 21, 1888 We had very fine weather today. I took a load of store goods over to Springville. I had to go around by Sacramento on account of the high water. When I went home, I stayed at the election awhile. S Wenrich and I fell out today. I demanded some of the money he owes us and he got very mad. Tomorrow we are going down to my father in law to the quilting. At Home Wednesday February 22, 1888 We had very fine weather today. We started for the quilting this morning and when we came down to Laudenslagers, they told us there was none, so we had to go home again. In the afternoon, we went down to the creek to start the ice. We started some but it was hard work. This evening Calvin cut my hair. Dr. B.F. Bartho came home today. He wants to go back tomorrow again. At Home Thursday February 23, 1888 Today it was very clear but a little cooler than yesterday. I repaired a clock for S.P. Schwalm. Chas Christeson a salesman fromCary Brothers & Grevemeyer was here. He invited me to stop at his house when I would come down to the city with my wife. Calvin got a situation in Shenandoah and will move up there. I will move in his house then. At Home Friday February 24, 1888 Weather was fine but a little cooler. I took some store goods over to Springville and from there, I fetched a load of coals. J.S. Klinger was with me. He wanted to go to Gordon tomorrow but as the snow is all away, we won’t go. I think we are going to have rain again. If the weather is fair, I am going to see my wife tomorrow night. At Home Saturday February 25, 1888 This morning it was raining terribly. The water began to rise and at about noon it took the ice from the dam. It stopped raining at about two o’clock but at about 9 o’clock it started again. I went down this evening to see my wife. Calvin took me over the creek with the ponies. At Home Sunday February 26, 1888 This morning it was clear but a little cooler. I left my wife about noon. Calvin got a letter from Shenandoah. He is going up next Monday, Perhaps on Thursday already. I am going to market again. The roads are very bad. At Home Monday February 27, 1888 This morning I started for market at about 3 o’clock. It was pretty cold. D. Laudenslager and A. Shade were with me. I left those shafts standing at the depot, which I had broken and took along down to get them made. We came home a little after dark. At Home Tuesday February 28, 1888 This morning it was very cold. I fetched a load of coals for S. Klinger for which I received $1.00. At Home Wednesday February 29, 1888 Today it was cloudy and looked as if it wanted to give snow. We were down at the quilting at Jno(John) Millers. I got my axle made, which I broke on Monday. I had to go to Kingerstown for the black smith. We came home a little before dark. At Home Thursday March 1, 1888 This morning it was snowing a little but it was almost clear at noon. At the time of this writing 9’clock it was raining. I was at Daniel Schwalm's vendue(sale) but had to come home at about noon. At Home Friday March 2, 1888 Today it was cold and cloudy till about 4 o’clock, when it commenced to rain. I fixed a watch for Andrew Shade and cleaned a clock for Gabriel Bartho. Samuel Herb was here from Tremont. I bought some fish, oysters, peanuts, oranges, and lemons. At Home Saturday March 3, 1888 This morning it was just clearing up and it got very cold in the afternoon. I sold a watch to D.W. Herb for $6.oo. It is getting late and I must go to bed. At Home. Sunday March 4, 1888 This morning it was very cold. I was in Sunday school this forenoon. After school, I was at Jno S. Klingers. In the afternoon, J.S. Klinger and I went down to D. Laudenslagers and had supper there. Fred Koppenhaver was here this forenoon. He brought a watch here for me to fix. At Home Monday March 5, 1888 This morning it was very cold. I left for market at about 3 o’clock. Calvin went with me. He went to Shenandoah. He is going to move up. It commenced to snow when I was coming home. I came home a little before dark. It was still snowing. At Home Tuesday March 6, 1888 This morning it was very cold. I fixed a watch for Fred Koppenhaver this forenoon for which I will charge $1.20. About 11 o’clock, I left for Jacob Koppenhaver's vendue. I was down seeing Lizzie. We came home at 5 o’clock. Jacob Carl's carpenters shop burned away. All his meat, potatoes, tools and things burned. At Home Wednesday March 7, 1888 It was pretty cold this morning. At about 9 o’clock it began snowing but cleared up in the afternoon. Tomorrow I am going to Henry Herb's vendue if the weather is fair. At Home Thursday March 8, 1888 The weather was pretty fair today, a little windy in the forenoon. I was at Henry Herb’s sale. We were playing ball in the forenoon and in the afternoon we were skating. We came home about 5 o’clock and I was very tired. At Home Friday March 9, 1888 Today it was nice and warm. I didn’t do much today. I wanted to fetch a load of coal but was too stiff from playing ball yesterday. I received a letter from Calvin yesterday. At Home Saturday March 10, 1888 Today it was fine. But by the time of this writing, 7 o’clock, it looks very much like rain. I fetched a load of coal this forenoon. The roads are getting very nice. At Home Sunday March 11, 1888 This morning it was snowing and at 10 o’clock it began raining and rained till about 5 o’clock when it began snowing again. I was in Sunday school this forenoon. After that, I didn’t go away from home. I wrote a letter to Calvin. At Home Monday March 12, 1888 This morning I got up at about 1 o’clock. It was just clearing off. It was very sloppy on the ground, at about 3 o’clock it began to get colder, and the slush and snow all got on the wheels and froze on them. It was after 11 o’clock when we came to Donaldson and our horses were nearly killed. J. Laudenslager and I started for home at about 3 o’clock. The snow was drifting and it got dark before we came to Rauch Gap. We didn’t come any farther than to Romberger's Hotel Sacramento. Tuesday March 13, 1888 This morning it was very cold and we were at Sacramento. We came there last night at about 9 o’clock after shoveling ourselves through the snow above the new schoolhouse. We couldn’t go any farther on account of the snow banks. So we stayed over night. We left after 9 o’clock for home after shoveling our selves through several snow banks again. One of my horses hurt himself in a snowbank. It was the hardest trip I had since I am driving. Wednesday March 14, 1888 It was very cold this morning and was snowing again. I nearly froze in bed last night. I have a very bad cold. I got it on Tuesday. I got a fish (steak cod) from Philadelphia that weighed 25 lbs. I also got some haddock. I sold them all except one. At Home Thursday March 15, 1888 Today it was pretty cold again but got warmer in the afternoon. I took my old grandfather’s clock ( which I got from Calvin) over yesterday and painted it. If it is dry, I am going to warnish(varnish) it yet. I also put the right wheel in it. Hannah received a letter from Calvin. He likes his place well. I think he is going to move before long. At Home Friday March 16, 1888 This morning the weather was very fine but it began raining about 3 o’clock and is raining still. I helped mother to bake cakes this forenoon. Tomorrow is payday I think I must go over to Springville and perhaps to Bear Valley. Tomorrow is my birthday St Patrick the 17 of March. I will be twenty years of age then. At Home Saturday March 17, 1888 This morning it was pretty cold. I started for Bear Valley at about 10 o’clock and came back to Springville at about 3. Then I went out to Jacob Shades and from there back to Springville again. I was also out in Gushwa also. Today was my birthday. I was very tired when I came home tonight. Sunday March 18, 1888 This morning it was pretty cold. I was down to see Lizzie. D Laudenslager and family & E. B. Schwalm were along. At Home Monday March 19, 1888 This morning it was pretty cold. But very nice and warm towards noon. I left at home for market at about 3 o’clock. It was very cold then. One of my horses lost a shoe and got very lame. I got home a little after dark. The roads were very muddy. At Home Tuesday March 20, 1888 This morning it was raining and rained nearly the whole day. The roads are more muddy than they were for the past 3 years. I was over in Springville with a load of store goods. From there, I went for a load of coals for J. L. Klinger. I only took 1/8 ton because the roads were too bad. At Home I traded a clock on a watch and chain with Ed Schmeltz. Wednesday March 21, 1888 This morning it was raining and blowing terribly but cleared up at about 9 o’clock. In the afternoon , at about 1 o’clock we had a bad thunderstorm, the first one for this year. I gave my grandfather's clock the last coat of paint today. Amos Kissinger asked me to help him to move next Tuesday. I will help. At Home Thursday March 22, 1888 This morning it was pretty cold. I was up at Jonas Miller's vendue. I bought an old buggy. We came home a little before dark. At Home Friday March 23, 1888 This morning it was very cold. I was at fixing up my old buggy the whole day. I hurt one of my fingers badly. I am going over to Springville and Sacramento. I want to try my old buggy once. At Home Saturday March 24, 1888 This morning it was very cold. Rueben Shade sent me his pole, which I made in the buggy instead of the shafts. In the evening we went over to Springville from there to Sacramento and then home. It was about 9 o’clock when we came home. Mrs. Isaac Coleman died this morning. At Home Sunday March 25, 1888 This morning it was pretty cold and began snowing at about 2 o’clock. I was in Sunday school. In the afternoon, I was at home all the time. At Home Monday March 26, 1888 This morning I left at home for market at 3 o’clock. It was snowing and when I came to Sacramento, it began raining and the rain froze as it came down. I was all covered with ice till I came to Tremont. Jim Garret and I wrote to the P.M. General in reference to the mail route with the Post Office of which I got papers to fill out last Thursday. Tuesday March 27, 1888 This morning it was very fogy. D.E. Carl and I went down to Amos Kissinger to help him to move up. We had a pleasant time. One of his daughters went with me. Nobody got drunk as far as I know. Although they had plenty whiskey. I didn’t taste any. At Home Mrs. Isaac Coleman was buried today. Wednesday March 28, 1888 Today the weather was fine but it began raining at about 5 o’clock. I colored me six Easter eggs and gave one to D.E. Carl. Tonight, Andrew Shade and I were up at Sacramento for the mail. The roads are very muddy. At Home Thursday March 29, 1888 It was cloudy today but cleared up in the afternoon. I was at home all day and nothing of importance happened. The roads are very muddy. At Home Friday March 30, 1888 Today we had the finest weather we had this whole year thus far. Jno Laudenslager and I were in Klingerstown this forenoon. In the afternoon, Jennie C. Mayer and Catherine Miller were down. Jennie played several good pieces on the organ. It looks very much like rain again. Saturday March 31, 1888 Today the weather was nice and warm. I took a lot of crocks and salt over to Amos Kissinger. This evening I am going down to see my wife. At Home Mrs. Daniel Schwalm died this afternoon at 6 o’clock. Sunday April1 1, 1888 Today it was Easter. The weather was fine in the forenoon but it rained a little in the afternoon. I came home at 10 o’clock and went to Sunday school and was elected Asst. Supt. My wife came up also. At Home Monday April 2, 1888 This morning I left at home for market at about 3 o’clock. We reached the city at about a quarter past 12 o’clock. Then we went to dinner and bought hats, groceries, drugs, w&w ware, &hardware. Towards evening, we were in Camden. After supper in the Walnut St. Theatre. The play, Fairy Well. Thursday April 26, 1888 Today the weather was fine. We almost finished our buying. We were in the cyclorama of Jerusalem and the crucifixion. It is a wonderful painting. In the evening, we were in the National Theatre where Byron played in Hero. We also passed through the public buildings. Tomorrow we are going out to Fairmont. Park and the geological garden. At Philadelphia. Friday April 27, 1888 Today it was very warm. We slept late today. We visited the Geological Garden, Fair Mt. Park, tour Paws Circus and ST. Jacobs Vine St. Theatre. The play in the theatre was, On the Rio Grande. We also bought some goods yet. I bought a stove today. We went up in the tower at Fair Mt. Park..270 feet from the ground. We enjoyed ourselves. Tonight we had a pitcher of beer. At Phila. Saturday April 28, 1888 Today it was very hot. After breakfast, we went over to Camden. We left Phila. for home at 9:40 and came to Reading at about 11:50, where Ellen Schwalm joined us. We had to change at Lebanon. We came to Goodspring at about 2:30, where our team waited on us with a load of goods. When we came home, I marked all the goods we took along up.
