Information in brackets [] supplied by the transcriber. January 3, 1935: Six years ago to day Grandma [Mary Alice (KLINE)] ECKROAT died, she died very sudden at 9:30 PM. January 9, 1935: It is an awful foggy and rainy day again. Roy TESNO [Roy Earl Tesno, born Sept. 3, 1891, s/o William and Carrie Tesno] was working on the rock chute and slipped and fell down onto the railroad and was instantly killed. January 12, 1935: The weather has cleared up at last. Roy TESNO was buried today and he had a big funeral. January 21, 1935: The post office was taken over by Jesse STROHECKER he succeeded Fred. BATDORF. January 25, 1935: Fri. At 9:30 tonight, Milton SMITH came down for me, as there was phone message. It was from Bessie telling me Pop [Isaac ECKROAT] had died at 6:30 PM. January 29, 1935: Tues. Pop [Isaac ECKROAT] was buried today. It was a nice day but cold. February 8, 1935: Fri. Harry WOLFGANG died today from pneumonia & asthma. February 12, 1935: Tues. H. WOLFGANG buried today. March 12, 1935: Six years ago today, Grandpa [Howard Grant] DENGLER died at the Ashland State Hospital. [Buried in Kimmel’s Cemetery, Barry Twp.] April 3, 1935: Wed. Felix LESHER died at 6 this morn. April 6, 1935: Sat. F. LESHER buried today at 1:30. [Buried in Kimmel’s Cemetery, Barry Twp.] July 15, 1935: One year ago today at about 2 P.M. Laura DENGLER [w/o Lewis DENGLER] took 2 tablesp. of lye in a half glass of birch beer, she died Tues. A.M., was buried July 20th. She left 5 children: Warren, June, Roger, Donald & James. August 10, 1935: Lewis DENGLER put his 5 children [see above] in Womelsdorf Reformed O[rphan]H[ome] September 24, 1935: Tues. Grace Sarah DENGLER born at 4 this morning [to Howard R. and Anna (MORGAN) DENGLER.] April 24, 1936: Fri. Ed HUMMELL’s house burned down at 3 o’clock this morning. November 27, 1936: Wed. H[arry] R[aymond] DENGLER & B[elle] BECTHEL married at 9 tonight. April 7, 1939: Fri. Today is Good Friday. Aunt Amanda [(MILLER) BOLICH] died very sudden at 10 o’clock this morning. April 11, 1939: Aunt Amanda [(Miller) BOLICH] was buried today, was dressed all in white, had steel colored casket. September 1, 1939: Fri. Emma WOLFGANG died today at the Ashland State Hospital. September 4, 1939: Mon. Labor Day. Emma WOLFGANG was buried today at 2 P.M. October 30, 1939: Mon. Mary Alice went to a Halloween party at Billie KELLER’s, when coming to party Arthur EVANS was hit with a car and killed, Lloyd SNYDER drove car. February 18, 1940: Sun. Mammie OSTER’S house burned down to-night. March 4, 1940: Mon. 3:30 this morning the mines settled in Shenandoah causing 6 blocks to settle. August 1, 1940: Thurs. Mrs. Wm. [Mary] FAIRLIE died today. August 5, 1940: Mrs. [Mary] FAIRLIE was buried today. October 5, 1940: Sun. Mother [Jennie Victoria (ECKROAT) HAINES] died at about 11 P.M. very sudden, took a stroke at 7 P.M., never talked after, Ceola & Uncle Ivan [KISHBAUGH] were there. July 20, 1942: Mon. [Howard] Russell & Anna (Morgan) DENGLER had a baby boy today [Richard Howard DENGLER.] Baby was born at 8 A.M. August 27, 1942: Thurs. Dan picked Warren KLAISS, MAY’s boy & Arthur FELKER up. MAY & Felker stood on running board, FELKER fell off and was unconscious, but seemed O.K., head was scratched. August 28: Fri. Arthur FELKER died this afternoon, found a blood clot. September 13, 1942: Sun. Russell [DENGLER] & Doris [MORGAN] got married today, 18 here for supper. January 8, 1943: Fri. Morris BATDORF died this eve. January 12: Tues. Morris BATDORF was buried this afternoon at 2. February 17, 1943: Wed. Helen KELLER had a baby boy. March 10, 1943: Wed. June and Tom WETZEL had a baby girl at 9 A.M., both fine. January 2, 1944: Sun. Luther WOLFGANG died this morning. February 12, 1944: Sat. Had a call from Russell, baby girl born at 4:30 P.M. [Mary Ida DENGLER] took Doris to delivery room 5:40 A.M., has red hair. March 1, 1944: Wed. Norman STITZER died suddenly. March 14, 1944: Tues. Went up to see George KESSLER. He died on Sat. March 15: Wed. G. KESSLER buried. April 4, 1944: Tues. Olive HEPLER had baby girl. April 15, 1944: Sat. Aunt Pheobe [(Miller) OSSMAN?] died at Pine Grove tonite. April 17, 1944: Mon. Betty PENNYPACKER married [Henry S. BOWMAN] tonight at 6:00 PM. April 19, 1944: Wed. Aunt Pheobe [OSSMAN?] buried today. June 8, 1944: Thurs. Mary Alice [DENGLER] graduated from Ashland High School tonight, nice day. June 21, 1944: Wed. Chuck’s Mom [Bertha (WITTMAN) PENNYPACKER, w/o Charles] died at 7:30 this morn. Dr. [David] KLASE [born, 1881, buried in Klase Family plot, Barry Twp.] was killed by hit & run driver. June 22, 1944: Thurs. Quay HORNBERGER was killed in mines this morn. June 23, 1944: Fri. Warm, had a storm about 8:30. Jim WETZELs barn burned [struck by lightning.] June 29, 1944: Thur. Had thunderstorm, Adam WELKER’s barn burned. July 29, 1944: Sat. Word came that Raymond WOLFGANG was killed in action. August 2, 1944: Wed. Mrs. Christ KRAH buried. August 7, 1944: Mon. Ed. PENNYPACKER buried today. August 8, 1944: Tues. John SNYDER buried today. August 11, 1944: Fri. Belle (BECHTEL) DENGLER died 6:30 P.M. September 9, 1944: Sat. C. WETZEL married. January 16, 1945: Tues. Doris called this morn. Betty [(PENNYPACKER) BOWMAN] had a baby boy at 6:08 AM at Ashland State Hospital [Carol Henry BOWMAN.] October 27, 1945: Sat. Found George [ECKROAT] had an abscess, operated on him, his heart gave out, went into coma. George died 9:15 P.M. October 31: Wed. George [ECKROAT] was buried today [in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Shenandoah Hgts.], service at house at 2 P.M. Rev. HEILBERGER preached sermon, had a shower right after we got back from cemetery. November 17, 1945: Sat. Bertha [Sarah (DENGLER) HOUSER] died this morn. 15 to 4. November 20: Tues. Bertha buried today from Nice’s Funeral Home, had supper at Methodist Church. March 11, 1946: George KLINE died. April 3, 1946: Uncle Ivan KISHBAUGH died today. April 6, 1946: Sat. Went to Uncle Ivan’s [KISHBAUGH] funeral with Ed. December 2, 1946: Mon. Found Jim WETZEL [born 1895, h/o Elsie A.] dead from heart attack, was laying in MAUER’s field. [Buried in Kimmel’s Cemetery, Barry Twp.] Zero today, windy.
