The Panther Valley By Francia W Job This is not the valley I used to Know long, long ago When the hillsides were green and small streams did swiftly flow. Now today your hillsides are barron and the streams are all gone dry. When you think of past memories it is enough to make you cry. Now in them days all had a job, of course, the pay was small. But it was better than today, when you have no job at all. They put a railroad through the valley with a tunnel through the earths crust, Now today the tracks are growed up in weeds and the rails are covered with rust. The highway was only a trail covered with rock, mud and dust, Today they have a smooth highway they can drive until they bust. Now how many people left this valley, for work they had to roam, But many will never leave here because to them it's home sweet home. Where breakers once stood now you see only a pile of stone, Where many a boy picked slate to help support the home. Every colliery had a whistle, at starting time it blew, Then again at lunch time and when the day was through. And many a mother looked at the clock to check the time When the echo came up the valley from the whistle at the mine. Now they took the bottom out of the valley and placed it on the top, Where once were beautiful trees, now are only piles of rock; many a miner spent his life working under the ground to earn a living and happiness, which he never found. Yes, this was a rich valley; no one had to starve or beg but they killed the goose that laid the golden egg; Yes, the miner has the most dangerous job on earth, But he takes that chance so that you have coal for your hearth. Did you ever look down that dark, black hole Where he goes down every day to mine your coal? In the morning when he leaves home he don't know if he'll return, But he takes that chance so you'll have coal to burn. Oh' yes, they have pension funds when he leaves the mines But he spends the best time of his life where the sun never shines. Now in this valley are many old men; at one time they were boys. They seen many breakers built, then in later years destroyed. They saw the passing of the straight shovel when the dragline took its place, They saw the coming of the bulldozer that pushed everything in its path it had to face They saw the coming of the diesel engine and the passing of the steam. They saw the tearing down of the shaft where the fireboss used to lean. Now many a miner worked hard and by the bosses he was nagged, Today his home is falling down, its walls are cracked and sagged. He can't get help from anyone, no matter which way he turns, HE knows he can't start over again the same money he'll never earn. Some can never start anew because they are to old;. One colliery after another disappears the time goes by, And many a poor miner will grieve until the day he dies; Now there is but one colliery left; how long will this one last? Let's have hope for the younger generation while us older forget the past. 10
