The above muster roll was typed by James C. Higgins III (great grandson on the Drummer John Higgins) from a copy of an old (presumably original) handwritten muster roll. It was written in old style script with quite legible handwriting. The original was clearly not in good condition when photocopied. It had fold marks, wear, tears, and small pieces missing. I received the photocopy from some Higgins descendents. 2. I estimate that this muster roll was taken in early 1861, based on the ages (and separately knowing birthdates of John Higgins and his older brother G. J. Higgins), and based on the fact that essentaily all of these men enlisted as Co. D of the 16 th Regiment on April 26, 1861. 3. ? indicates unsure due to handwriting or tears in paper. 4. The Schuylkill Co. Web Page has a list of the Pennsylvania Volunteers of the Civil War, Sixteenth Regiment, Company D, Recruited at Tamaqua, Schuylkill County, Mustered in April 26, 1861. I compared this list of Co. D to the above Jackson Guards Muster Roll and found them very nearly identical. The following differences were noted: the officers and staff contained the same 13 men; there were 63 privates in Co. D and 64 in the Jackson Guard; 6 men were in the Jackson Guard but not in Co. D (Edward Buckley, James Harley, John Harley, Joseph Stoot, Patrick Senclair, & Michael Sullivan); 5 men were in Co. D but not in the Jackson Guard (John Chapman, James Hoover, James M'Ginley, Patrick Tual, & Patrick Winkle); and there were some minor spelling differences in the names throughout.
