John J. McHugh The body of Pvt. John J. McHugh, 1211 West Centre street, is among the remains of 4,183 Americans who lost their lives in World War II, being returned to this country from Europe aboard the U. S. Army Transport Lawrence Victory. Arrival of the vessel will be announced by the New York Port of Embarkation. The dead aboard ship includes 400 from Pennsylvania. Son of Mrs. Ellen McHugh, the young Gold Star was killed in action on January 7, 1945, in France. He was first listed as missing in action. Pvt. McHugh entered the armed forces on December 23, 1942, and trained at Fort Knox and Fort Campbell, Kentucky, before going overseas. He was one of the first soldiers from this area to cross into Germany. His mother received the Purple Heart award on behalf of her son. An accompanying citation and message included a medal with three bronze service stars. In Many Campaigns Shenandoah's 64th Gold Star, the youth participated in the European, African and Middle Eastern campaigns. He served on combat duty in the Naples-Foggia campaign and the Rome-Arno campaign prior to service in the German campaign. Pvt. McHugh was a member of the Annunciation Church. In addition to his mother, he leaves three brothers, Francis, William, of town and James, teacher at the West Mahanoy Township High School, Shenandoah Heights and two sisters, Miss Margaret McHugh, town, and Mrs. Helen Wilcolm, Philadelphia. The remains of War heroes arriving on the Lawrence Victory include Pvt. Hubbard L. Allen, Jr., of Tamaqua; Pvt. Santo Barilla, Mt. Carmel; Pvt. George Checkan, Pottsville T/Sgt. Michael Dawida, Morea; Pfc. Anthony Jurewicz, Mt. Carmel; Pfc. John R. Lotwick, Mahanoy City; Major Lucius G. McLaughlin, Ashland; Sgt. H. O. Messerschmidt, Barnesville R.D. 1; Pfc. William J. Morris, Centralia, and Sgt. George Stencovage Jr., St. Clair.
