John J. McHugh Laid to Rest Today Shenandoah paid solemn tribute this morning as military funeral services were held for Pvt. John J. McHugh, of 1211 West Centre street, who was killed in action in France, January 7, 1945. He was Shenandoah's 64th Gold Star of World War II. Flags were displayed at half mast and stores and business places were closed during the funeral services. Large crowds lined both sides of Main street while the solemn procession moved toward the cemetery. Military tribute was paid at the home after which the cortege proceeded to St. George's Church where a solemn Mass of requiem was celebrated by Rev. Emil Oestreich. He was assisted by Rev. Joseph Farrell, deacon, and Rev. James Leonard, O.S.F.S., of Philadlphia, sub-deacon. Present in the sanctuary during the Mass were Rev. Joseph A. Karalius. Rev Bernard Shimkus, Rev. John Luksys, Rev. Henry F. Kiggins, and Rev. Cornelius McLaughlin. Father Oestreich administered the rites of absolution in the church and Father Farrell performed the committal services at the grave. Members of the Annunciation Choir sang during the Mass. Walter Roland sang a solo, "Ave Maria," at the Offertory. In tribute to the deceased veteran, at the close of the church services, the choir sang "The Star Spangled Banner." Color bearers were William Swirick and Andrew Kutsko; color guards were John Sanders and Joseph Suskie, and bugler, Eugene Stravinsky. Members of the firing squad in charge of Alex Yancofsky, commander, were Peter Roman, Boley Brozoski, Joseph Anuscavage, Albert Romanot, Anthony Kwapick, John Maekarewicz, John Maciborka and Thomas Mackerewicz. The American Legion Post No. 370. was in charge of the military services. The military escort included George Martz, second vice-commander of the 13th District of the American Legion; Joseph Rooney, commander of the Anthony P. Damato Post; John Litwak, John Ferguson, John Twardzik, Sam Schutawie of the Anthony P. Damato Post; Frank Brophy, district commander of the Amvets; George Galgut, Andy Ocealis, John Salukas and Edmond Redmond, of the VFW: John McGuire, president of the Veterans Advisory Council, and Joseph E. Dalton, county commander of the Catholic War Veterans. Interment took place in the Annunciation Cemetery. J. J. Franey had charge.
