There was a notable gathering in the parlor of the Merchant' hotel at 11 o'clock Saturday morning when, the three exceptions, the editors of the English papers published in Schuylkill county met and laid the foundations of a permanent association. J. Irvin Steel, president of the State Editorial Association and editor of the Ashland Advocate, was called to the chair; and on motion of C. Schumway, John A. Bechtel, of the West Schuylkill Press, was made Secretary. On motion of Mr. Zerbey it was decided to include in the membership all working newspaper men, but that only one vote should be allowed to each publication. Pottsville - Geo. F. Helms, Standard. Pottsville - Claude G. Whetstone, Daily Miners' Journal. Pottsville - Burd S. Patterson, Miners' Journal. Pottsville - J. H. Zerbey, Daily Republican. Pottsville - C. D. Elliott, Schuylkill Republican. Pottsville - John J. O'Connor, Saturday Review. Pinegrove - Alfred E. Gilbert, Gazette. Shenandoah - M. E. Doyle, Sunday News. Shenandoah - H. C. Boyer, Evening Herald. Shenandoah - W. J. Watkin, Weekly Herald. Shenandoah - John F. Finney, Sunday Dispatch. Tower City - R. B. Wilson, Echo. Tremont - John A. Bachtel, West Schuylkill Press. Tremont - U. G. Batdorff. At the request of Mr. Whetstone the chairman gave a resume of the work and character of the State Association, after which a committee consisting of Alfred Gilbert, H.C. Boyer and Geo. F. Helms was appointed to draft the organization. During the committee's absence a motion of Mr. Helms to name the association the "Schuylkill Press Association," was discussed and finally carried. Upon the return of the committee, and on their recommendation the following officers of the permanent organization were elected: President - Hon.
