Two Killed, Five Missing, Four Wounded In Vicinity Shenandoah and vicinity experienced one of its saddest week-ends with receipt of a casualty list containing two killed, five missing in action and four wounded, all from this area. The dead: S/Sgt. Joseph B. Hughes, Shenandoah Heights. Pvt. Russell J. Thomas, Frackville. The missing: Sgt. Anthony Tutko, town. T. 5/G Joseph Oakstan, town. Pvt. John J. McHugh, town. Pfc. James W. Wasser, town. Pvt. Guy Whitner, Ringtown. The wounded: Cpl. John Sedar, Frackville. Pfc. Thomas L. Corrigan, Jr., town. T/Sgt. Michael McDonald, Lost Creek. Cpl. Harold B. Guinn, town. S/Sgt. Hughes Son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hughes, 246 Virginia avenue, Shenandoah Heights, S/Sgt. Joseph B. Hughes was reported killed in action somewhere in Belgium on January 3. The family until recently lived at 1252 West Coal street. Sgt. Hughes was wounded in action last September 16, in Germany and later wrote home telling his parents he was being hospitalized in France. A member of an armored infantry division, he wrote home a Few months ago saying he had been all through Belgium and into Germany. He told his family not to worry, "I'll get along." A graduate of J. W. Cooper High School, class of 1938, Sgt. Hughes is Shenandoah's 61st Gold Star of World War II. Only 22 years of age when reported killed, he was in the service since December 5, 1942. He received basic training at Camp Phillips, Kansas. He was on maneuvers in Tennessee before he left for overseas service from Fort Meade, Md., arriving in England, and from there into France and Germany. He served overseas about 16 months. He was a member of the Annunciation Church, where a Solemn Mass of Requiem will be celebrated Wednesday morning at 8 o'clock. In addition to his parents he leaves five sisters; Mary, wife of Lt. Joseph Mulroy, Pacific theatre; Frances, Catherine, Geraldine and Jean, all at home and three brothers, James and Bernard, at home and Cpl. EdWard E. Hughes, Air Corps, McDill Field, Fla. Pvt . Thomas Mrs. Lewis C. Thomas, of 23 North Broad Mountain Avenue, Frackville, was notified in a War Department telegram that her son, Pvt. Russell J. Thomas, was killed in action on December 8, on Leyte. He would have been 34 years of age last December 15. A native of Frackville, he was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church. In the service almost three years, he trained at Jackson S. C. and Camp Polk, La., and finally Los Angeles before going overseas last March. He served at Hawaii and Guam. Pvt. Thomas is the father of two children, Dorothy and Robert. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Vincent Grace, of St. Clair. He attended the Frackville public schools. Sgt. Tutko George Tutko, of 311 West Washington street, was notified by the War Department that his son, Sgt. Anthony E. Tutko, was reported missing in action since January 3, 1945, somewhere in France. T.5/G Oakstan Mrs. Sophie Oakstan, of 1201'West Centre street received notification from the War Department that her son T.5/G Joseph F. Oakstan was reported missing in action since January 1, somewhere, in Germany. He entered the service on April 26, 1943, and trained at Camp Maxey, Texas. Pvt. McHugh Mrs. Ellen McHugh, of 1211 West Centre street, received word in a War Department telegram that her son, Pvt. John J. McHugh, was reported missing in action since January 7, somewhere in France. He entered the service on December 23, 1942 and trained at Fort Knox, Ky. and Fort Campbell, Ky., before going overseas. He was listed as one of the first soldiers from this area to cross into Germany. Pfc. Wasser Mrs. Stella Wasser, of 1194 West Coal street, received word from the War Department that her son, Pfc. James W. Wasser, is reported missing in action since December 20 in Luxembourg. He entered the service on February 20, 1943 and served at Fort Bragg, N. C., later being sent to Treasure Island, Calif. He is 20 years old. Pvt. Whitner Son of Joseph Whitner, West Main street, Ringtown, Pvt. Guy Whitner was reported missing somewhere in Belgium since December 30, in a telegram from the War Department received by his wife, Catherine, also of Ringtown, on Saturday. The father of two daughters, Pvt. Whitner, who is 29 years old, was inducted in March, 1944. He received his basic training at Camp Wheeler, Ga., and later at Camp Meade. Last September he left for overseas and was assigned to the infantry. Cpl. Sedar Basil Sedar, of 611 South Line street, Frackville, received word from the War Department in a telegram, that his son, Cpl. John Sedar, was slightly wounded in action on January 4, in Germany. He trained at Fort Ord., Calif., before going overseas. Pfc. Corrigan Pfc. Thomas L. Corrigan, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Corrigan, Sr., of 222 North Chestnut street, was reported slightly wounded in action on December 31 somewhere in France. Pfc. Corrigan was wounded once before, in France, on November 17, 1944. He is in the service since September 9, 1943, and received basic training at Fort Benning, Ga. Sgt. McDonald Mrs. Bridget McDonald, of the New Road section of Lost Creek, received notification from the War Department, that her son T/Sgt. Michael McDonald was reported slightly wounded in action on December 18, in Belgium. He was wounded in action once before. Cpl. Guinn Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Guinn, of 133 South Market street were informed in a War Department telegram, that their son Cpl. Harold R. Guinn, was reported slightly wounded in action on January 9, somewhere in France. He entered the service on February 24, 1943 and served in Italy before being transferred to France. He is overseas almost 18 months.
