John was born in Jonestown, Schuylkill County, Pa., on April 20, 1918, a son of the late Andrew & Anna Kish Hanzok. He attended local schools and married the former Ann M. Steponaitis of Minersville, Pa. on Sept. 4, 1940. John served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during WWII. After the war, John moved to New Albany, Pa., where he owned and operated his own restaurant, the Kozy Korner, for seven years. He drove truck for a short time for Percy Dieffenbach's Novelty Wreath Company of New Albany. He began working for GTE Sylvania, later Osram, in Towanda, Pa., from which he retired at age 75, in 1993 after 35 years of service. John was a member of St. Basil's Church, Dushore, Pa. and was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #3915 and a Fourth Degree member of Towanda #0979 Assembly. He was a member of Towanda Post #42 American Legion, and a member of the GTE Quarter Century Club. John was an avid hunter and fly fisherman and golfer and was a former member of the Towanda Country Club. Surviving are his spouse, Ann, at home; four sons and daughters-in-law: Jack and Emily Hanzok of Lansdale, Pa., Robert and Priscilla Hanzok of Wyalusing, Pa.; twin sons, Mark and Sandra Hanzok of Cherry Hill, N.J., and Kevin Hanzok of New Albany, Pa.; two sisters, Irene Burke and Frances Ochs, both of Minersville, Pa.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in death by a daughter, Regina Ann in 1942 and by a brother, Andrew Hanzok, and four sisters; Anna Revak, Helen Munster, Mary Hanzok and Elizabeth Subrine. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 10, at 10:30 a.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, Pa., and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Basil's Church, Dushore, Pa., with the Rev. David R. Betts, his pastor, presiding. Interment will be in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Friends may call at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. The family will provide the flowers and request that memorials be directed to St. Basil's Church, P.O.
