We encourage links to the state and county table of contents. _________________________________________________________________ Pottsville Republican - 7 March 1927 Two Brothers Smothered In a darkened home in Minersville , a widowed mother sits greiving over the bodies of two sons, Frank and Michael Stephanoski, who lost their lives in the workings of the Pine Hill Colliery saturday afternoon. The young men, aged 24 and 27 respectively, were working in one of the breasts, and when the hour for quitting had arrived and they failed to " check out ", a search was made by the fire boss, John Nace. He had found that the couple had been caught when the roof of the breast caved in and were smothered. A crew was placed on the job of digging the men out. One was gotten out a little before four o'clock, the other not not until about six o'clock. Just how the accident occurred is a matter of conjecture, but the supposition is that the brothers had fired a shot and before they could get to a place of safety the roof caved in and engulfed them. The accident was not known of until they failed to appear after the shift with the rest of the men on the mine. An investigation disclosed the accident and fatality. The two young men were exceedingly popular among the younger element of Minersville, being known generally as the Shoemaker brothers. The bodies were removed to the morgue of undertaker Hummel, at Minersville, and after an investigation by the coroners office taken to the saddened home. They leave to survive them their mother, Mrs Mary Stephanoski, three brothers, Paul and Joseph of Primrose, and William , of Minersville, two sisters Lizzie, wife of Peter Bonchak, of Primrose, and Mary wife of Anthony Trenoskie of St. Clair . The funeral will be held from their late residence in Primrose, Wednesday morning, with high mass in St. Nicholas church, Minersville. Undertaker Hummel will be in charge.
