Will of JONAS SASSAMAN Deceased - In the name of God Amen, I Jonas Sassaman of Kratzerville, in the Township of Jackson in the County Snyder and the State of PA, farmer, being weak in body but sound in mind memory and understanding do make and publish this my last will and testament as follows. To Wit - First it is my will and I do order and direct that all my just debts and funeral expenses be duly paid and satisfied as soon after my death as conveniently may be. Second, I give and bequeath unto my dearly beloved wife FANNY all my house and kitchen furniture and all other personal property of whatever kind it may be on the lot of ground whereon I now reside at Kratzerville all what she select to keep except the Secretary and Government Bonds, Promissory notes, and cash on hand during her natural life. Third, I give and bequeath to my said wife FANNY the use and occupancy of the house and lot whereon I now reside during her life time. Fourth, After the death of my said wife, I give and devise the house and lot whereon I now reside unto my daughter SUSANNAH for the consideration sum of one thousand two hundred dollars as part of her legacy during her life, if she leaves no child or children the said property shall be sold at public sale to the highest and best bidder and after deducting necessary charges and expenses, I order and direct to be divided in equal shares among my other children, if the said Susannah leaves no child or children of her own. I order and direct my hereinafter named Executors to sell the piece or tract of land situate in Monroe Township, County and State aforesaid, containing one hundred and fifty acres more or less whereon WILLIAM STAHL now resides as soon after my decease as conveniently may be by public sale for the best price that can be got for the same, also my share of grain on said premises aforesaid and all my Government Bonds, Bank Stock and personal property whatever my said wife FANNY not select, shall be sold. I order that two thousand dollars shall remain unpaid of the purchase money of the real property as a dower of the aforesaid piece or tract of land until after the death of my said wife FANNY, the interest shall be paid unto her annually for said two thousand dollars during her life time & after deducting necessary charges and expenses, I order and direct to be divided in ten (10) equal shares the proceeds of my estate one share of which I direct my executors to pay to my daughter MATILDA intermarried with S.R. YEARICK, one to my son LEWIS SASSAMAN, one to my son HENRY SASSAMAN, one to my son DANIEL SASSAMAN, one to my son JONAS SASSAMN, one to my daugther REBECCA intermarried with JACOB TRUTT, one to my daughter SARAH intermarried with HENRY BERGE, one to my daughter SUSANNAH, one to the children of my deceased son SAMUEL SASSAMAN, one to the children of my deceased daughter SOPHIA, was intermarried with WILLIAM SUPER. I intend to equal all my children alike. I have already advanced to my children as follows to wit my deceased son SAMUEL the sum of fifteen hundred dollars, to my daughter MATILDA intermarried with S.R. YEARICK and said S.R. YEARICK the sum of (unreadable) hundred dollars, to my daughter REBECCA intermarried with JACOB TRUTT and to said JACOB TRUTT the sum of fifteen hundred dollars, to my son HENRY SASSAMAN the sum of fourteen hundred dollars, to my son LEWIS the sum of twelve hundred dollars, to my son JONAS SASSAMAN the sum of fifteen hundred dollars, to my daughter SARAH intermarried with HENRY BERGE and to HENRY BERGE the sum of fourteen hundred dollars, to my deceased daughter SOPHIA was intermarried with WILLIAM SUPER and to said WILLIAM SUPER the sum of nine hundred dollars, I mean and all my children shall have equal shares of the whole amount of my estate as near as can be made share and share alike. Lastly I nominate and appoint my two sons DANIEL and HENRY SASSAMAN to be the executors of this my last will and testament, In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this tenth day of November Anno Domini one thousand and eight hundred and sixty eight. JOHN DAUBERMAN HARRISON BROUSE [NOTE: Regardless of how weak of body Jonas felt he was at the writing of his will in November of 1868, he did not die until September 3, 1878. Upon his death JACOB GILBERT, Esquire appeared before JOHN VANZANDT, Register of Wills for Snyder County to "depose and say" these were the true signatures of the two men, as he knew the signature of John Dauberman and he believed that the other was that of Harrison Brouse, who was "no longer a resident of this state".] WILL PROBATED Be it rememberd that on 9th day of September A.D. 1878 before me JOHN VANZANDT, Register of Wills in and for said county, came DANIEL SASSAMAN and HENRY SASSAMAN, Executors of the estate of JONAS SASSAMAN, late of Jackson Township, Snyder County, PA deceased who upon being duly sworn according to the law do depose and say that the said JONAS SASSAMAN died on the 3rd day of September A.D. 1878 about the hour half past four o'clock PM and further says not DANIEL SASSAMAN and HENRY SASSAMAN. Sworn & subscribed the day and year aforesaid before me J.M. VANZANDT, Register. BACKGROUND: Jonas Sassaman Jonas Sassaman was born March 24, 1793 in Monroe Township, Snyder County and died in the same section. His wife Fanny was Fanny Kline daughter of Lieutenant Barnhart Kline, a Revoultionary War soldier who lived in the vicinity of Kratzerville. In 1785 Lt. Kline lived in Northampton County, PA. Jonas was the son of Henry Sassaman who died at Kratzerville on January 6, 1794, when Jonas was only an infant. On November 24, 1817, when Jonas came of age, the other children of Henry Sassaman petitioned the court of Union County to divide the estate of Henry Sassaman. It is believed that Henry Sassaman might be the same Henry Sassaman who served in Captian Crouse's Company of the Berks County Militia. Henry Sassaman married a Catharine (last name not known). The children of Jonas Sassaman and Fanny Kline were: Lewis (b.1820) m. Sarah Super, sister of William Super; Samuel (b. 1822) m. Anna Hassinger; Henry (b. 1824) m. Mary Bergey, sister of Henry Berge; Daniel Sassaman (b.1826) m. 1st to Eva Klinger d/o George, 2nd m. Mary Wetzel, and 3rd m. Mrs. Sarah Musser; Catherine Matilda 9b.1828) m. Samuel R. Yearick; Rebecca (b.1830) m. Jacob Trutt, a first cousin; Sophia (b.1838) m. William Super, sister of Sarah Super; Susannah (b. 1832) never married; Sarah Sassaman (b.1834) m. Hernry Berge, brother of Mary Berge.
