Boston, Biographical Review Publishing Company: 1899, ppg 69-70. James H. Baush is a practical and progressive agriculturist of Quemahoning, Pa., and one of the leading citizens of the township. His paternal grandfather, Andrew Baush, was a native of York County, Pennsylvania, from whence he came to Somerset County in 1808, and at once settled on the present homestead in Quemahoning. Very little of the land had been touched by plough or spade and long years of hard labor were required to improve it. Here he followed his free and independent calling until the close of his earthly career, when but fifty-two years old. He married Sarah Peterson, a woman of true Christian character and a devout member of the Lutheran church. She bore him thirteen children. One of these is still living, Louise, wife of Isaac Blanset. She has one child, Austin, who married Tillie Fleegle, and has six children. Joseph Baush was born July 10, 1810, in Quemahoning, on the Baush homestead, and there spent his entire life of eight-three years, industriously and successfully engaged in farming. In his early life he was a Jacksonian Democrat, but later he became identified with the Republican party. Active in religious matters, he was a member of the Lutheran church, to which his wife belongs. He married Rebecca, daughter of Christopher and Elizabeth (Cupp) Stauffer. She was born July 12, 1813, in Stony Creek, Somerset County, and now, a bright and active woman, makes her home with her son, James H., on the home farm. Of her seven children two are living, namely: James H.; and Annie C., who married Jerome Stufft, and has two children - James B. W. and Daniel G. James H. Baush was born on August 10, 1844. He grew to manhood on the parental homestead, acquiring an excellent education in the public schools of the town. At the age of twenty years, September 19, 1864, he enlisted as a private, under Captain John R. Kuhn, in Company G, Ninety-third Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, which was commanded by Colonel D. W. Eckerman, with whom he served until the close of the war. He met the enemy in many a skirmish, and was twice in battle before Petersburg, on March 25, 1865, and again on April 2, 1865. After receiving his honorable discharge from the army, Mr. Baush returned home, and for a few years taught school winters and farmed in the summer months. Then learning the brick moulding trade, he followed that in Quemahoning three years, but has since been engaged in agricultural pursuits. He has one hundred and ninety-five acres of land in the homestead estate, and also owns another valuable farm of one hundred and forty acres. Politically, Mr. Baush is a representative Republican of the county, and has given excellent service as a public official. For two years he was Assessor; three years a School Director; and for three years Auditor, a position to which he was re-elected in 1898 for another term of three years. Fraternally, he is a member of the third Commander of the Reuben Ferner Post, No. 318, G.A.R., of Stoyestown, which he was instrumental in organizing; a member of Stoyestown Lodge, No. 372, I.O.O.F., in which he has passed all the chairs; and also a member of the Mystic Chain Order, of Stoyestown borough, in which he has filled all the offices.
