Boston, Biographical Review Publishing Company: 1899, pp 320-321. Joseph A. Boyer, who died at his home in the village of Hollsopple, town of Paint, Pa., was a man of eminent worth and a highly respected citizen. He was born in Jennerstown, Somerset County, July 15, 1851, and was a son of Samuel Boyer. His paternal grandfather, Joseph Boyer, who was one of the early farmers of Jennerstown, later in life removed to Bedford County, this state, where he spent his declining years. Samuel Boyer was a native and a life long resident of Jennerstown. During his active years he was profitably engaged in agricultural pursuits. By his first wife, whose maiden name was Mary Ann Gallagher, he had five children, Joseph A. being the third. The only one of them now living is Margaret, who is the wife of Henry Brooks and mother of four children-Garey, Mary, William, and Samuel. After the death of his first wife Samuel Boyer married Ellen Mostholder, who bore him two children-Annie and Owen. Joseph A. Boyer worked at the carpenter's trade in the town of Somerset in his early manhood, and later followed farming for several years, being first located in Jennerstown and afterward in Conemaugh township, this county. Removing from there to Paint, he settled in the village of Hollsopple, where he dealt in agricultural implements as the representative of a well-known manufacturing firm. He was a man of good business ability, and established a large trade in farming machinery and tools. He was a sound Democrat in politics. On July 20, 1873, Mr. Boyer married Christina Weaver, who was born in Quemahoning, Pa., November 5, 1851, the daughter of Daniel A. and Polly (Blough) Weaver. Her father was an extensive agriculturist of Somerset County, owning a large farm lying in three adjoining towns-Quemahoning, Jenner, and Conemaugh. He was a strong Republican in politics, and both he and his wife were members of the Mennonite church. She died at the age of forty-seven years, and he at seventy four. Of their eleven children seven are now living; namely David, Mrs. Boyer, Barbara, Catherine, Polly, Daniel, and Mary. Barbara is the wife of John L. Leahan, and has six children-Ellen, Emma, Hiram, Mary, Ira and Kate. Catherine, wife of Joseph P. Ringinger, has nine children-Annie G., Della M., Charles O., Daisy M., James E., Daniel O., Effie E., Walter C., and Joseph E. Polly, wife of Hiram Bowman, has two children. Daniel Weaver married Lucy Herring, and has seven children. Mary Weaver is the wife of Scott Lohr, and has two children-Martha and Malinda. Mr. and Mrs. Boyer had five children, of whom there are living. The following is a brief record: William married Ida Faust, and they have four children-Harry, Samuel, Maisy, and Allie; Ida, wife of Oscar Havener, has four children; and Mary, wife of William Wolford, has three children-Stella, Herbert F., and Hallie M. Mrs. Boyer is a member of the United Brethren church.
