Brubaker, a teacher by profession, now engaged in farming in the township of Shade, Somerset County, Pa., where he was born on April 22, 1847, is the descendant of early settlers of this county. Mr. Brubaker's grandfather, Jacob Brubaker, was born in Brother's Valley, and there grew to years of maturity. He afterward removed with his family to the adjacent town of Conemaugh, where he carried on farming pursuits a few years. He died at the age of sixty-seven in Shade, at the home of his son Abraham. His wife, whose maiden name was Cable, bore him seven children, of whom one is now living, John, who married a Miss Johnson. Mrs. Jacob Brubaker was a member of the Dunkard church Abraham Brubaker, father of the subject of this sketch, was born in 1810, in Conemaugh township, Somerset County, and there learned the blacksmith's trade, which he followed at first in Stoyestown and later in Shade. He subsequently purchased the homestead now occupied by his son Michel A., and was here engaged in blacksmithing and farming the remainder of his life. A man of industrious habits, energetic ambitious, he prospered in his undertakings, and was respected by his neighbors and fellow-townsmen. He married first, Rachel Ray, who died at an early age leaving his three children, as follows: Daniel who married a Miss Crawford, and has two children: Sarah, who is the wife of Jeremiah Walter, and has seven children; and Lena, who is the wife of Charles W. Statler, and has two children. He married for his second wife Annie Pisel, who as born in Quemahoning, and died on the home farm in Shade, at the age of sixty-four years. She was a member of the Lutheran church. Of this union there were five children, namely: Michel A. and Catherine, twins; John; Job; and William. Catherine, wife of Thomas G. Ford, has seven children-Perrion, Annie, Mollie, Grace, Edna, Agnes, and Emily. John married Emma Mowrey, and has five children. Job married Annie Dunmeir, and has children. William married Stella Chapell, and has three children. Michel A. Brubaker completed his education at the County Normal School, where he was fitted for a teacher; and for twelve years after his graduation he taught during the winter seasons, and followed farming in the summers. He has since devoted himself to agricultural pursuits on the old home farm, which contains one hundred and eighty acres of land. Practical and progressive in his methods, a diligent worker and excellent manager, he has been abundantly prospered. He is a Republican in his political principles, and has given much of his time to the discharge of public duties, having been School Director and Justice of the Peace fifteen years. He is now Supervisor of Elections. Both he and his wife are valued members of the Church of Christ, in which he has faithfully served as Elder twenty years. On February 7, 1871, Mr. Brubaker married Jane, daughter of George W. and Matilda (Berkebile) Clark. Fourteen children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Brubaker. Cora, Bertha, Charles, Foster, Tillie, Edward, Mary, Martha, Kate, Frank, Annie and two others are now living.
