Silas Flick, a practical and progressive agriculturist of Jefferson township, Somerset County, was born August 7, 1843, on the farm where he now lives. He is the son of the late Samuel and Martha (Miller) Flick. Mr. Flick's paternal grandfather, Ludwig Flick, was a lifelong resident of Milford, Pa. A farmer by occupation, industrious and thrifty, he took up a tract of wild land, from which he cleared a homestead, which is now owned and occupied by one of his grandsons, Isaiah Flick. His wife's maiden name was Heckler. They had a number of children, of whom six boys and two girls grew to maturity. Samuel Flick, born on the home farm in Milford, one of triplets, and the only one to live. Although so small at the time of his birth that he could easily have been put in a quart measure, he had great vitality; and at the time of death, December 27, 1893, he had passed the eightieth anniversary of his birth. After his marriage he located in Jefferson township, and having purchased the estate now owned by his son Silas, the special subject of this sketch, was here successfully engaged in the pursuit of agriculture during his remaining days. He was a man of honest worth, a valued member of the Lutheran church and an active worker in the Democratic ranks. His wife whose maiden name was Martha Miller, was born in Addison, Pa., a daughter of Ludwig Miller. She died in Jefferson, January 9, 1892, in her seventy-second year. They reared three children- Phoebe, Cinderella, and Silas. Phoebe, widow of the late Simon Young, of this town, has had four children, of whom two are living, namely: Salome, wife of Josiah Hemninger; and Ida, who is the wife of Herman Gross, and has one child, Eva. Cinderella is the widow of Silas H. Cabel, late of Jefferson township, and has two children- Annie and Ellen. Annie is the wife of Hiram Baldwin, and has one child, Flora. Silas Flick, following in the footsteps of his ancestors, has made farming his chief occupation, and since coming into possession of the parental homestead has been especially successful in his labors. A highly respected farmer and citizen and a steadfast Democrat in his political affiliations, he has taken an active interest in advancing the material welfare of his town. On December 14, 1880, Mr. Flick married Savilla Brougher, daughter of Jeremiah and Mary Ann (Hay) Brougher. Her father is a retired farmer of Jefferson. Her parents are both members of the Lutheran church. They have had nine children, six of whom survive, namely: Mrs. Flick, Ellen, Wesley, Willis, Maggie, and Lizzie. Ellen is the wife of Austin Schrock, and has three children- William, Norman, and Emma; Wesley married Binnie Countryman, and has four children- Grace, Frank, Clarke, and Edward; Willis married Susan Brubaker; Maggie, the wife of Lemon Miller, has three children- Annie, Mary, and Jennie; and Lizzie, wife of Samuel Ream, has one child, Annie E. Mr. and Mrs. Flick also belong to the Lutheran church. They have one child John Luther, born April 29, 1887.
