Boston, Biographical Review Publishing Company: 1899, pp 218 and 221. Henry H. Gardner, an enterprising and able agriculturist of Jefferson, Pa., was born on the farm where he now resides, February 9, 1842, being a son of Ludwig and Diana (Maurer) Gardner. His paternal grandfather, George Gardner, was born in York County, Pennsylvania, and was one of the early settlers of Jefferson, where he brought up his large family of children. Further ancestral history may be found on another page of this volume, in connection with the sketch of David Gardner. Ludwig Gardner was born on the parental homestead in this town in 1821, and was here engaged in farming pursuits until his death in 1890. A man of intelligence and energy, he occupied a place of prominence in the community, and was often placed by his fellow-townsmen in places of responsibility. He was a straight Republican, ever ready to do his duty at the polls; and for some years he served as Tax Collector, as School Director, and as inspector and judge of elections. He was an active member of the Lutheran church, as was his wife. She was born at Brother's Valley, Somerset County, in 1822, and died in Jefferson in 1870, aged forty-nine years. They had twelve children, of whom ten are now living; namely, Henry H., Lydia, Harriet, Sarah, Caroline, Margaret, Elizabeth, George, Alexander, and Austin. Lydia is the wife of Homer Redpath. Harriet is the widow of Andrew Kelley, of Philadelphia. Sarah is the wife of John Shank, and has four children- Ida, Nettie, Annie, and Hattie. Caroline, wife of Henry Baker, has five children- Herbert, Erma, Andrew, Hattie, and Oen. Margaret, wife of Ludwig Baker, has three children- Warden, Gertrude, and Golden. Elizabeth is single. George, who married Clarissa Alice Horner, has ten children- Edward, Jacob, Harry, Homer, Carrie, Annie, Maggie, Stella, Mamie, and Nancy. Alexander married Mary Shaffer, and has six children- Charles, Royd, Nellie, Erma, Homer, and Harry. Austin married Kate Baldwin, and has four children- Arthur, George, Annie and Gertrude. Ludwig Gardner married for his second wife Harriet Knupp, widow of Peter Lohr, 1872, who still survives him. They had four children; namely, Monroe, Welcome, Lillie, and Nora. Henry H. Gardner was reared on the home farm, and educated in the public schools of Jefferson. In 1862 he enlisted as a private in Company K, One Hundred and Seventy-first Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, in which he served nine months. In 1864, he re-enlisted and was appointed Corporal of Company E, Ninety-third Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, with which he was connected until the cessation of hostilities. He actively participated in the siege of Petersburg, the battles of Farmerville and Sailor's Run, and in many skirmishes. On receiving his honorable discharge Mr. Gardner resumed work on the old home farm, where he has since successfully engaged in the independent occupation of a farmer. He is a public-spirited, loyal citizen, a sound Republican in his political views, and has served in many offices of the town, including those of School Director, Assessor, Auditor, inspector of votes, and judge of elections. On March 7, 1861, Mr. Gardner married Maria, daughter of Jacob and Mary (Crise) Horner. She was a devout Christian woman and a valued member of the Lutheran church. She died in 1871, at the age of thirty-three years, leaving three children- Harry, Agnes, and Matilda. Harry Gardner married Carrie Shaffer, and has two children- Lional and Ivon. Agnes is the wife of West Friedeline, and has one child Orie. On November 21, 1872, Mr. Gardner married for his second wife Caroline, daughter of Samuel J. and Mary (Ankeny) Rhoades. Mr. and Mrs. Gardner are both identified by membership with the Lutheran church. They have one child, a daughter, Mary, who is the wife of Jehu Bell, and has two children- Royal and Gertrude.
