Boston, Biographical Review Publishing Company: 1899, pp 24-25. Gabriel Good, an enterprising farmer of Somerset, Pa., where his paternal grandfather, Jacob Good, was an early settler, was born in this township, August 22, 1847, a son of Abraham and Lavina (Trent) Good. Jacob Good was born in Germany, November 5, 1772, and came to America when a young man. His wife's name is not known. He reared three sons and seven daughters. Of these ten children the only survivor is Magdalene, who is the widow of Jacob Snyder, and has one son, Samuel Snyder. The latter married Mary Walker, and has five children. Abraham Good, the youngest child of Jacob, was born in the township of Somerset, February 17, 1816, and until his death, April 5, 1864, was engaged in general farming at the old homestead. He was widely known as a man of upright character, industrious and preserving, and an earnest supporter of the principles of the Democratic party. For his first wife he married on June 14, 1838, Catherine, daughter of Peter Ankeny, of Lincoln township, Pennsylvania. She died in March 1846, having borne him three children, of whom but one is living, a son Josiah, who was born March 23, 1846. His second wife, Lavina Trent, whom he wedded on September 15, 1846, was born January 29, 1826, daughter of Nathan and Sarah (Weigle) Trent. Six children were the fruit of this union, namely: Gabriel, Isaiah, Ellen, John E., Emma, and one that died when very young. Josiah, the eldest son, married Margrette Stuff, and has three children- Virgil, Laura, and Jerome. Isaiah, born June 30, 1853, married Joanna Mostollar. They have two children- Webster and Lottie. Ellen, born October 26, 1856, is the wife of David Smith, and has eight children- Clara, Arthur, Ada, Minnie, Margrette, Ruth, Herbert, and James. John E., born January 11, 1862, is the husband of Sidney Shaver, and has one child, Ethel. Emma, born February 13, 1864, married John Ross, and has two children- Harry and Ada. After the death of her husband Mrs. Good married David Barnhardt, by whom she had one child, Lucy, who was born August 7, 1868. Lucy Barnhardt married James Smith, and died December 22, 1890, leaving her husband with two children- Lottie and Della. Gabriel Good received his early education at the Bear School in Somerset township. From his youth up he has lived on the ancestral farm, consisting of one hundred and twenty-five acres of land. He has made substantial improvements on the place, and with the latest approved implements and machinery is here carrying on the various branches of agriculture with most satisfactory results. A man of acknowledged ability and tact, he is frequently called to serve in offices of public trust, and he has invariably shown himself loyal to the interests of his constituents. He has been Tax Collector and School Director; was County Auditor in 1889, 1890, and 1891; and in 1896 was elected County Commissioner for a term of three years. In politics he is a sound Republican, and both he and his wife are active members of the Lutheran church. On Feb 9, 1870, Mr. Good married Sarah Jane Cupp, a daughter of Eli Cupp, who was a carpenter in his early life, but afterward settled on a farm in Somerset township, where he is still engaged in general farming. Mr. Cupp married Elizabeth, daughter of John Miller, of Jennerstown, Pa. Of their five children three are living, as follows: Sarah J., now Mrs. Good; Theodore, who married Theresa Long, and resides at Wheeling, W. Va.; and John, who married Annie Picking and has five children, all boys- Webster, Franklin, Vernon, Robert, and Howard. Mr. Cupp is a Republican in his political affiliations, and both he and his wife are connected by membership with the Lutheran church. Mr. and Mrs. Good have had five children, four of whom are living, namely: Lucy E., who was born December 1, 1871, married Nelson J. Bittner, and has two children- Carrie A. and Ada; Harry B., born January 18, 1880; Lillie M., born February 10, 1884; and George N., born May 7, 1885.
