Miller is a successful real estate and lumber dealer residing at Rockwood, in Milford township, his native place, Somerset County, Pa. He was born on May 9, 1847, son of Daniel D. and Mary Ann (Miller) Miller. His paternal grandfather, Daniel Miller, who died in 1856, was born in Somerset County, and here followed the combined occupations of a farmer and wagon-maker. He married Polly Long. They had eleven children; namely, Jacob, Gabriel, Daniel D., Josiah, Ephraim, Mannasseh, Rachel, Lydia, Susan, Mary, and Lena. Ephraim Miller resides at Summit Mills, Somerset County. Susan is the wife of Jonathan Lichty, and resides in Morrill, Kan. Mary married William Myers, and resides in Meyersdale, Somerset County, Pa. Daniel D. Miller, the third son, as above mentioned, was born in Elk Lick township, Somerset County, April 2, 1815, and died on January 21, 1892. In his youth he learned of his father the trade of wagon-maker, which he has made his life occupation. He was a member of the German Baptist, or Dunkard church. His wife, Mrs. Mary Ann Miller, to whom he married in 1835, and who is still living, is a daughter of Joseph and Catherine (Livengood) Miller and one of a family of twelve children; namely, Christian, Jacob L., Jonathan, Joseph L., Gillian, Elizabeth, Mary, Barbara, Susan, Catharine, Annie, and one that died in infancy. Joseph is the only son living. He resides in Nebraska. Elizabeth married Abraham Saylor, and resides in Morrill, Brown County, Kan. Barbara married Emanuel Lichty, and lives at Meyersdale. Catherine has been twice married, her first husband being William Horner and her second Jonathan Kelso, with whom she resides in Kansas. Annie married Eli Berkley, and resides in Morrill, Kan. Daniel D. and Mary Ann Miller had ten children. Three have passed away. The living, five sons and two daughters, are: Cyrus, Joseph D., Ephraim D., Susan, Mary, John C. F., T. Milton. Cyrus is a farmer near Lanark, Ill. Joseph D. is engaged in mercantile business in Rockwood. Susan resides in Rockwood with her mother. Mary married Richard Sechler, and resides in Somerset township. John C. F., of Rockwood, served as Postmaster under President Harrison, and is a Justice of the Peace. T. Milton is a letter carrier in Connellsville, Fayette County, Pa. Ephraim D. Miller acquired his education in the Milford public schools and the county normal school at New Centreville. From 1865 to 1871 he was engaged in teaching, his experience in that vocation including four winters at Grantsville, Md., two terms at Somerset, and one term at Pea Ridge, Alleghany County, Md. In June, 1871, he came to Rockwood, and went into a store with his brother, J. D. Miller, the firm name being Miller Brothers. The partnership continued for eighteen years, during which they did a good business. Ephraim D. Miller then retired, selling his interest to his brother, and since that time has been dealing in lumber and selling real estate. On Christmas Day, 1877, Mr. Miller was married to Almira, daughter of David and Susan (Vought) Weiner, of Rockwood. They have six children: David, born September 24, 1878, was educated in the public schools of Rockwood and the State Normal School at West Chester, and is now a teacher in the intermediate department of the public schools of Rockwood, Pa. Lillie, born may 31, 1881, is an attendant of the public schools. The four younger children are: Roscoe, born on May 31, 1883; Harry, April 9, 1885; Daniel Earl, June 20, 1891; Ray McPherson, September 24, 1893. A Republican in politics, in 1890 Mr. Miller was elected Representative of Somerset County to the Pennsylvania legislature, and served on the committees on Federal Relations, Judiciary, and Mines and Mining. Again elected in 1892, during that term he served on the same committees, also on the Committee on Appropriations. In 1872 he was elected as a member of the Milford township School Board, on which he served three terms. When Rockwood became a borough in 1881, he was elected to serve on the school board eight years, or until 1900. Fraternally, he is a member of Somerset Lodge, No. 358 F. & A.M., of Somerset Pa., of which he is a Junior Warden; Rockwood Council, No. 801, Royal Arcanum, of which he was the first Past Regent, and is now Collector; and of Rockwood Tent of Maccabees. He is a member of the United Brethren church at Rockwood, in which he has taken an active part as leader, steward, and Sunday-school superintendent. At the present time he holds the office of steward and Sunday-school superintendent, and has served in the later capacity for twelve years.
