Boston, Biographical Review Publishing Company: 1899, pp. 98-99. Jacob S. Phillippi, a well-known farmer and stock-raiser of Milford, Pa., was born at the family homestead, a part of which he now occupies, on March 17, 1833, son of Peter and Catherine (Shultz) Phillippi. His father's grandfather was Francis Phillippi, a Frenchman. This ancestor upon his arrival in America located in Eastern Pennsylvania, but afterward removed to that part of Bedford County which was later set off as Somerset County, and resided in Centreville for the rest of his life. He served in the French and Indian War under General Braddock, and participated in the battle of Fort Duquesne. He reared six sons, all of whom settled in what is now Milford township. John Phillippi, son of Francis and the grandfather of Jacob S., was a native of Bedford County and the original owner of the homestead in Milford, upon which he resided for forty years, or until his death. Aside from farming he taught English and German. He was prominent in public affairs, and served as Justice of the Peace for forty years. He married Catherine Weimer, and had a family of seven sons and one daughter, none of whom are now living. Peter Phillippi, the father of the special subject of this biography, was born in Milford, Pa, April 18, 1808. He became a large farmer and landed proprietor, owning at one time upward of one thousand acres of agricultural property in this locality, and was the most extensive stock-raiser in Somerset County. He died February 14, 1885. For many years he was a member of the Reformed church, and took an active interest in religious matters. He married Catherine Shultz, daughter of Jacob and Susanna (Linhurst) Shultz. Her earliest ancestor in America emigrated from Germany, settling in New Jersey prior to locating in this county; and her parents reared a family of five sons and six daughters. She became the mother of three children: Jacob S., the subject of this sketch; Adeline, now residing in Allen County, Ohio, being the widow of Rudolph Boose, a merchant, stock-dealer, and farmer; and Sabrina E., who married George W. Curley, and resides in Maryland. Jacob S. Phillippi was educated in the common schools. He resided with his parents until 1858, when he engaged in cultivating one of his father's farms, and for some time was associated with the elder Phillippi in the cattle business. In 1870 he removed to his present place of residence, his property comprising a portion of the old homestead. He owns two hundred and twenty acres of desirable land located on the road from New Centreville to Rockwood. On November 4, 1850, Mr. Phillippi was united in marriage with Susan Boose, daughter of Rudolph and Susan (Walker) Boose. Her grandfather was Jacob Boose, a native of Switzerland, who settled in Bedford County, but removed to Ohio when his son Rudolph was eleven years old. Jacob Boose married Catherine Wingard, and reared three children: John; Mary, who married Fred Schaffer; and Rudolph Boose. Mr. and Mrs. Phillippi are the parents of six children, namely: Rudolph B., who married Nellie Mason, has three children - Guy, Maud, and Irene - and lives on a farm in York County, Nebraska; Emma Jane, who married William H. Rink, and resides in Jenners township, having two children - Ora Grace and John P.; John Phillippi, a clerk in the Pittsburg post- office; Andrew Bruce, a school teacher; Anna Grace, who is residing at home; and Homer Milton Phillippi, who is attending school. In politics Mr. Phillippi is a Democrat. He has interested himself to some extent in public affairs, having rendered excellent service to the town as School Director, Supervisor, and Inspector of Elections. For many years he has been a Deacon of the Reformed church at Centreville, and Mrs. Phillippi is a member of the Lutheran church in that place. Mr. Phillippi is a member of Somerset Lodge, No. 438, I.O.O.F., of Somerset, Pa.
