He took up several tracts of land comprising about eleven hundred and fifty acres. It was located on the north side of Gohn Run and extended northwest across the headwaters of Huskin's Run, although he did not receive warrants for these tracts until 1792-93. Rhoads, a blacksmith by trade, built his log cabin home and a shop near the head of Gohn Run. His second tract of land, Number 4046, lying near the head of Huskin's Run, was known as "Rentland."
