He took an active interest in education and was the first man in the township to agitate for free public schools. He did much to promote the acceptance of the "Free School Law" passed by the General Assembly of the commonwealth in 1834, and the establishment of free schools in the district in 1837. He was a member of the township board for twenty-nine years.
