Schell, a prominent young business man of Somerset, Pa., was born in this township, July 6, 1865, son of John J. and Rose (Ankeny) Schell. His father, now living in Somerset, is a son of Henry Schell, formerly of Schellsburg, Bedford County, Pa.; and his mother was the daughter of Isaac Ankeny, of Somerset, a representative of one of the of families of this county. Henry Schell was engaged in agricultural pursuits in Schellsburg, Bedford County, Pa., throughout his entire life, and was one of its most respected citizens. To him and his wife, whose maiden name was Mary Snyder, six sons and three daughters were born, of whom the following named are living: Amanda, who is the wife of Professor G. J. Stutzman, and has seven children - Lou, Annie, Cora, Lillian, Edward, Frank, and Schell; John J.; Henry F., who married Rose Stewart, and has three children - Marion, Susan, and Stewart; Charles; Andrew J., who married Sadie Pile, and has five children - Lucy, Frank, Charles, Samuel, and Edward; William H.; and Young. John J. Schell was born and bred in Schellsburg, where he assisted in the care of the parental homestead during his youth and early manhood. On attaining his majority he came to Somerset, where he was prosperously engaged in mercantile pursuits several years. He subsequently established himself in the real estate business, an enterprise in which he met with success, an he also did a great deal of contract work for Somerset County. He is now living retired from active labor, enjoying the fruit of his former years of industry. A man of strong character and strict integrity, he is held in the utmost respect throughout the community, and is a valued member of the Christian church. His wife, whose maiden name was Rose Ankeny, died at the age of seventy-four years, leaving six children - Ida, Ella, Annie, Myra, Edith and Paul A.; Ida is the wife of Sanner L. Wilson, and has four children - Irene, Edna, Herbert, and Helen; Ella is the wife of Dr. R. W. Clark, and has two children - Eleanor and Robert; Annie, wife of James L. Lewis, has two children - Schell and Edith; and Myra, wife of R. B. Read, has three children - Iola, Pauline, and Rosswell. Paul A. Schell attended the public schools of Somerset until he was sixteen years old, when he began learning the plumber's trade, which he has since made his occupation. A skilful workman, he has built up a fine business in this locality, and is known far and wide as one of the leading plumbers of this part of the county. Industrious and upright, fair in his dealings, he has won in a marked degree the respect and confidence of his fellow-men. Politically, he affiliates with the Republican party; and, fraternally, he is a member of Somerset Lodge, No. 358, F. & A.M., and of Somerset Lodge, No. 438, I.O.O.F. On August 7, 1890, Mr. Schell married Mary S., daughter of Dr. A. J. and Catherine (Johnson) Endsley, of Somerset. They have one child, Wilbur E., who was born May 12, 1891. Mr. Schell is an active member of the Christian church, and Mrs. Schell belongs to the Presbyterian church.
