Boston, Biographical Review Publishing Company: 1899, pp 315-316. Martin L. Shaver,* a well-known business man of Quemahoning, Somerset County, was born in this township, August 2, 1853. He is a son of the late Philip Shaver and a grandson of Philip Shaver, Sr., an early settler of this county. (Further ancestral history of the Shaver family may be found on another page of this volume, in connection with the sketch of Cyrus M. Shaver.) Philip Shaver, son of Philip, Sr., was born in Somerset, Pa, in 1817. When a young man he learned the carpenter's trade, which he subsequently followed in connection with general farming. For many years he resided in Quemahoning, where he was a prominent member of the Lutheran church, which he served as Elder, trustee, and Deacon. He was twice married, and by his first wife, whose maiden name was Sarah Mowrey, had two children - Oliver P. and Elizabeth. His second wife, Elizabeth Woy, was born in 1827 in Quemahoning, and is now living in Friedens village, in the town of Somerset, where he died at the age of sixty-two years. Eight children were born of his second union; namely, Josiah, Eli, Martin L., Sarah Jane, Jeremiah, Maggie, Nancy S., and Julia C. Martin L. Shaver, the subject of this sketch, was reared and educated in Quemahoning; and until 1896 he was prosperously engaged in agricultural pursuits on the old homestead, which he still owns. He has since operated a grist-mill, carrying on a substantial business in what is called Spruce Town in Quemahoning. He is a firm supporter of the principles of the Republican party, and has rendered excellent service to his town in various official capacities. For three years he was School Director, three years he served as Auditor, and one year as Judge of Elections. Fraternally, he is an active member of the Mystic Chain of Stoyestown, and has held many of the important offices of that lodge. On January 27, 1876, Mr. Shaver married Mary, daughter of Josiah Long. They have four children living; namely, Edmund S., Cora L., Edith M., and Rose F. Mr. Shaver is an influential member of the Lutheran church, which he has served as Deacon a number of years, and Mrs. Shaver is connected with the Reformed church.
