Boston, Biographical Review Publishing Company: 1899, pp 165-166. John S. Snyder, a well-known and esteemed resident of Stony Creek township, Somerset County, was born April 7, 1851, on the farm where he now lives, and on which his mother, whose maiden name was Lydia Rayman, was born in 1817. His father, John H. Snyder, was the eldest child of Henry of Christian (Mowrey) Snyder, lifelong residents of Somerset County, who reared a family of five sons and one daughter. John H. Snyder was born in Stony Creek township, September 24, 1813, and here spent his life of eighty years, dying in 1893. Industrious and thrifty, well endowed with sound sense and good business ability, he became one of the most successful farmers of this locality, and at his death left a good property. A strong supporter of the principles of the Republican party, he was a citizen of influence, rendering good service to the township as School Director and also at one time as Poorhouse Director. He was very active in religious circles, and for many years was a Deacon and an Elder in the Lutheran church, to which both he and his wife belonged. Lydia Rayman, whom he married, was a daughter of George and Elizabeth Rayman. Her father was a farmer in Stony Creek township. She died in her seventy-seventh year, leaving six children of the family of twelve born to her and her husband. The following is a brief record: Daniel, who married Eva Ringler, has no children; David married Kate Long; Sara is the wife of William J. Suder and has one child, John Walter; John S. is the special subject of this sketch, and further mentioned below; Joseph J. married Mary Mowrey; and Samuel S. married Maggie Coleman. John S. Snyder acquired a practical education in the public schools of Stony Creek township, and since attaining manhood has been busily and profitably engaged in agricultural pursuits on the home farm. He has one hundred and seventy acres of good land, a large portion of which is under cultivation, and each season produces abundant crops of the staple productions of this section of the Union. Favored by fortune to a considerable extent, he has seemingly held the secret of success from the beginning of his active career, and now occupies an assured position among the leading farmers and citizens of this township. He is a stanch Republican in his political views. He was elected School Director in 1897, and re-elected in the present year, 1899. He is a valued member of the Lutheran church, to which his wife also belongs. On October 17, 1878, Mr Snyder married Rosa B., daughter of Ephraim D. and Isabell (Will) Snyder, she being the fourth of nine children, of whom these eight are living - Charles, Emma, Maggie, Mrs. Snyder, Martin, Amanda, Grant, and Austin. Charles married Ella Glotfelty, and has three children - Emma M., Nellie, and Arthur. Emma, wife of Augustus Whipperman, has nine children - Lottie, Charles, Annie, George, Edward, Ada, Harvey, Clyde, and Orlo. Maggie, wife of Peter Baer, has four children - Ada, Ida, Harry, and Hazel. Martin married Mary Snyder, and has two children - Maggie and Myrtle. Amanda, wife of Lincoln Frank, has four children - Edith, Harry, Jennie, and Belinda. Mrs. Snyder's parents were both members of the Lutheran church, in which her father was a Deacon and an Elder for many years. He was a farmer and miller in the township of Somerset, where he was identified with the Republican party, and served for several years as School Director. He died at the age of forty-nine years, and his wife who survived him a brief time, rounded out a half century. Mr. and Mrs. Snyder have two children, namely: Sadie M., born February 22, 1880; and Emma B., born June 6, 1882.
