John began his business career at the early age of fifteen years by operating a supply store for his father located along the Forbes Road near the old Stoy place. Several years later, near the same place, John operated the first tavern in Shade Township. In time his tavern became a noted place along the new road called the Pennsylvania Road. Stotler was the proud owner of more than eight hundred acres of land in the township. In the election of 1820, John Stotler was chosen a member of the General Assembly of the commonwealth, serving in that capacity for several terms. Mr. Stotler was a very active leader in the activities of the Shade Lutheran Church, the first church built in Shade Township. John Stotler and his wife, Catherine, are interred in the Stotler Cemetery.
