Boston, Biographical Review Publishing Company: 1899, pp 326-327. Manoah Tannehill, M.D., physician, dentist, and apothecary of Confluence, was born in Lower Turkey Foot, September 2, 1838. He is a son of Josiah and Frances (Mountain) Tannehill, the latter a grand- daughter of Oliver Drake, the founder of Draketown. Josiah Tannehill, the Doctor's father, was born in Lower Turkey Foot in 1801, son of William Tannehill, who was born in Preston County, Virginia (now West Virginia), and was a son of Samuel Tannehill. William Tannehill, the grandfather settled in Somerset county as a pioneer, and is said to have purchased a farm near Draketown of a man named Hanna for two gallons of rum and a grubbing hoe. He became a prosperous merchant and a real estate owner. He was Captain of a militia company during the War of 1812, was an auctioneer, and served as Constable for twenty years. He died in 1825. He married Delilah Hyatt, and his children were: Nancy, Zachariah, Josiah, and William, none of whom are living. Josiah and Frances (Mountain) Tannehill, Dr. Tannehill's parents, had a family of ten children, namely: Sarah, who married Adam Singanfelter, and is no longer living; Alpheus, who enlisted in an Iowa regiment during the Civil War, was in General Bank's Red River expedition, was taken ill, and died at a hospital in St. Louis; Alonzo, who died at the age of twenty years; Hannah, who died aged eighteen years; Elizabeth, who is the widow of William Shaw, and resides in Connellsville, Pa.; Delilah, who died at the age of two years; William, who lives in Missouri; Manoah Tannehill, M.D., the subject of this sketch; Jasper N., who occupies the old homestead at Lower Turkey Foot; and Catherine A., who married John Beverage, and resides in Westmoreland County. The father, who was a prosperous farmer, died in 1877. Manoah Tannehill obtained his early education in the public schools of his native town, the County Normal School, and the Southwest State Normal School, Lebanon, Ohio. He was assistant teacher at Professor Stilson's Somerset County Normal School two terms, was similarly employed three years in Ohio and three years in West Virginia. In 1861, while teaching, he took up the study of medicine and dentistry. In 1864, 1865, and 1867 he taught in West Virginia, and for some time he practiced dentistry in that State. His medical studies were pursued at the Philadelphia University of Medicine and Surgery, from which he graduated in April, 1872. He has since resided in Confluence. Some time after settling there he resumed the practice of dentistry in connection with his other professional work, and since 1888 has carried on a drug store, having passed a successful examination before the State Board of Pharmacy at Harrisburg. In May, 1872, Dr. Tannehill was joined in marriage with Kate C. Clark, a native of Ohio, and has two children: Ralph C., born in 1873, married Effie Tissue, and is now a student at Baltimore College of Dental Surgeons; and Ella Grace, born October 25, 1877, completed her education at Clarksburg, W. Va., and is residing at home. Dr. Tannehill is a member of the Somerset County Medical Association, the Pittsburg Odontographic Society, and since 1872 has been Signal Service Observer. He is Examining Surgeon for the Royal Arcanum, the Odd Fellows Endowment Association, the New York Life and other insurance companies. Politically, he was a Republican
