While a resident of Bedford, Co. Pennsylvania he served as a private as follows: He enlisted in Romney, Virginia in April 1778, served as a substitute for Benjamin Critchfield, in Captain James Brenton's Co., Colonel Evans' Virginia Regiment assisted in building Forts McIntosh and Laurens, and was discharged in November 1778. He enlisted in the spring of 1780, served seven months in Captain John Moore's company, Colonel Piper's Pennsylvania regiment; this service was protecting the Frontier inhabitants from the Indians. He enlisted in the spring of 1781 or 1782 and served two months in Captains Buzzard's Pennsylvania Company. After the Revolution he lived in Pennsylvania. and Ohio. He was allowed pension on his application executed Sept. 29, 1832, then a resident of Howard Twp., Knox Co. Ohio; where he had lived about twenty-six years. John Critchfield, brother of Nathaniel was a resident of Holmes co., Ohio in 1832. It is not stated that Nathaniel was married or what relationship he was to Benjamin Critchfield.
