Pa. * Died Dec. 24, 1901 in Des Moines, Polk Co. Iowa * He helped recruit and organize Co. A 11th Illinois Infantry * He then turned this company over to Smith D. Atkins, whom he helped elect Captain. Helped recruit 7 other companies * Entered service as 1st Lieutenant Co. B 46th Regiment Ill. Infantry * Promoted to Captain and did staff duty. * In 1864 he became Colonel in 142nd Ill. Infantry * On Mar 22, 1865 he was promoted to Brigadier General for gallant, meritorious and devoted service. * Slightly wounded at the battle of Fort Donelson. * Severely wounded in the leg at Shiloh. * Wounded while on the skirmish line at the White House. * Fought in the following battles: Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, 2nd battle of Corinth, Campaign into Mississippi, Vicksburg and Nashville Campaign * His troops were the first to reach St. Louis when Price was on his raid towards that city. * He is a brother of Henry Giese and Peter De Walt Ankeny * Served as Field and Staff Officer in 142nd Regiment Illinois Infantry * Invalid Pension: Applied July 18, 1890, Application #931615, Certificate #644347 SOURCE: * Ankeny Family File, Meyersdale Library * Rootsweb.com * Ancestry.com, Military
