C 52nd Regiment Pa. Infantry * Drafted at age 33 in Chambersburg, Pa. * Mustered in Sept. 26, 1864 in Chambersburg, Pa. * Discharged June 24, 1865 by General Order at Salisbury, North Carolina * Contracted Chronic Diarrhea on May 12, 1865 * Died of Chronic Diarrhea at 11:00 A. M on July 4, 1865 at Harrisburg, Pa. and was buried in the city cemetery * He was at Harrisburg for 4 days before he died * He was paid yesterday $141 dollars and has left a gun and a few articles of clothing of little value all of which are with us subject to your order * Mary Ann started for Harrisburg, Pa. on July 5, 1865 for the purpose of bringing Philip home, Upon arriving in Harrisburg, Mary learned that Philip had died on July 4, 1865 and was buried the next day. She visited his grave and was persuaded not to raise the body for removal home and allowed it to remain there. * Peter Lenhart the bearer of this note has taken from this Rest - To - day the effects off his brother-in-law, Philip S. Darr, who died here on the 4th inst. Said Philip S. Darr was a discharged soldier and left a U. S. Springfield musket and accoutrements which he is taking to the family of the deceased in Westmoreland Co. Pa. along with his other effects * Widow Pension: Applied Nov. 23, 1865, Application #115899, Certificate #116096 * Widow Pension lists the following: Widow - Mary Ann; Maiden name of Widow is Flick; Philip and Mary Ann were married Nov. 6, 1855; Minor Children are as follows: Matilda Agnes born Sept. 26, 1861 and Allen Philip born Sept. 5, 1864; Certificate dated July 17, 1868 grants Mary Ann a pension of $8 per month commencing July 4, 1865 with an additional $2 per month for each minor child until they were 16 years old as follows: Matilda Agnes on Sept. 25, 1877 and Allen Philip on Sept. 4, 1880 SOURCE: * 1906 County History, Somerset Co.
