David R. * Born 1840 in Carmarthen, Wales * One of two survivors living, who was aboard the Monitor when it had its memorable fight with the rebel ram Merrimac, at Hampton Roads. * Enlisted Feb. 5, 1862 for service on the Monitor as a coal heaver. * Promoted 10 days later to Engineer's Yoeman and subsequently served as Paymaster's Steward * The Monitor was lost in a gale off Cape Hatteras on Dec. 31, 1862. Mr. Ellis and most of the others of the crew were taken aboard the Rhode Island.
