* Born June 5, 1842 in Berlin, Somerset Co. Pa. 
* Died May 15, 1869 - age 26 years 11 month 10 days, committed suicide 
* Buried in Berlin I. O. O. F. Cemetery, Berlin, Pa. 
* Private Co. F 142nd Regiment Pa. Infantry 
* Enrolled Aug. 19, 1862 at age 20 in Berlin, Pa. by F. A. Edmunds 
* Mustered in Aug. 25, 1862 at Harrisburg, Pa. by Lieutenant Brayton, U. S. A. 
* Mustered out with company May 29, 1865 
* Served Aug. 25, 1862 - May 29, 1865 - 33 month 4 days 
* Taken prisoner at Gettysburg 
* He is a brother of Augustus Heffley 
* Eyes - Hazel; Hair - Sandy; Complexion - Fair; Height - 5' 7" 
* Occupation at enrollment - Wheel Right 
* He was in the following battles: Fredericksburg; Gettysburg, where he was 
taken prisoner and paroled on the field; Wilderness May 5, 1864 where he was 
captured and remained in a Rebel prison for six months. 
* Prisoner at Dansville, Va. 
* Dec. 12, 1863 He was reprimanded by Lt. Col. for cussing Lt. Gardill 
* Jan. 16, 1863 detailed to hunt for the body of Herman Fritz, did not find body 
* Invalid Pension: Applied Oct. 22, 1868, Application #136464, Certificate 
#95810; Widow Pension: Application #182537, Certificate #143483; 
* Minor Pension: Application #208584, Certificate #162299
