* Died Aug. 21, 1911 in Brothersvalley Twp. Somerset Co. Pa. 
* Buried in Francis Maust Farm Cemetery, Brothersvalley Twp. Somerset Co. Pa. 
* Private in Captain William M. Schrock's Co., after Oct. 2, 1863 1st Battalion 
Pa. Infantry 
* Enrolled at age 26 
* Mustered in June 24, 1863 in New Centerville, Somerset Co. Pa. 
* Mustered out Jan. 8, 1864 in Harrisburg, Pa. 
* Private Co. H 187th Regiment Pa. Infantry 
* Enlisted Mar 25, 1864 at age 28 in Shanksville
* Mustered in May 7, 1864 in Harrisburg, Pa 
* Mustered out Aug. 3, 1865 with company 
* Served May 7, 1864 - Aug. 3, 1865 - 14 month 26 days 
* Herman is a brother of Joseph W. Lape 
* In 1863 he was stricken with Rheumatism and was in the hospital at Sunbury, 
Pa. for three weeks 
* He was granted a leave of absence
* In the fall of 1864 he was detailed as provost guard at Head Quarters 
* He was in the following battles: Petersburg, Cold Harbor, Arlington Heights 
and Gettysburg 
* Invalid Pension: Applied Apr. 26, 1889 and Apr. 29, 1907, Application #700960, 
Certificate #526443; Widow Pension: Applied Sept. 19, 1911, Application #971979,
