Infantry * Enrolled Sept. 9, 1864 at age 18 in Pittsburgh, Pa. * Mustered in Sept. 10, 1864 as Private in Pittsburgh, Pa. * Discharged June 20, 1865 * Height - 5' 3"; Hair - Dark; Complexion - Dark; Eyes - Blue * Occupation at enrollment - Farmer * Not accounted for * Invalid Pension: Applied Sept. 14, 1889 and Jan. 17, 1911, Application #728708, Certificate #1008210 * Ran away at age 15 to join the Union Army * Was present at Lee's surrender * In 1938 William and a man who lived nearby; who fought for the Confederates, traveled to Gettysburg, together, as guests of the Pennsylvania Commission.
