* Enrolled Feb. 11, 1864 at age 19 in Somerset Co. Pa. to serve 3 years or the 
duration 
* Mustered in Feb. 2, 1864 in Harrisburg, Pa. 
* Transferred to 1st Prov, Cavalry Co. D. 
* Discharged July 13, 1865 at Clouds Mills, Virginia by reason of  S. O. #44 C. 
C. Hd. Qrs. 
* Served Feb. 11, 1864 - July 13, 1865 - 17 month 2 days 
* Age 18 
* Height - 5'7"; Hair - Dark; Complexion - Light; Eyes - Dark 
* Occupation - Farmer 
* Paid in full ??? 20, 1865 
* Mr. Shoemaker in conversation with Mr. Bisel related an incident of the last 
engagement at Appomattox as a member of the 20th Pa. Cavalry. He said orders 
were issued to his cavalry regiment to lighten for action, and he cut loose a 
ham which he had tied to his saddle and tossed it among the 142nd infantry men 
who were camped alongside the cavalry men. He did not know what became of the 
ham until some years afterward when he was relating the incident here in 
Meyersdale to a crowd of comrades among whom was Garrett Forespring, and the 
latter exclaimed: that story is true, for I am the fellow who got the ham.
