Regiment Infantry * Enrolled Apr. 18, 1861at age 28 to serve 3 years or the duration, in Somerset Co. Pa. * Mustered in June 20, 1861 SS * Mustered in July 21, 1861 FS at Camp Wilkins, Harrisburg, Pa. * Discharged June 11, 1864 at Pittsburgh, Pa. by reason of expiration of term of service * Age 28 * Height - 5'8"; Hair - Light Brown; Complexion - Fair; Eyes - Gray * Occupation - Teacher * Residence at enrollment - Elk Lick Twp. Somerset Co. Pa. *Paid in full at Pittsburgh June 14, 1864 * Filed Oath of Identity Feb. 14, 1865 while a resident of the town of Salisbury, Somerset Co. Pa. * Served Apr. 18, 1861 - June 26, 1864 * Served June 20, 1861 - June 11, 1864 - 35 month 21 days * Wounded and partially paralyzed on the third day of the second battle of Bull Run. He accompanied the regiment to Gettysburg. Owing to the paralysis of his left side the army surgeon refused to allow him to remain, and he was sent to the Point Hospital, where he became clerk to Dr. Davis, who had charge of the 3rd Brigade Hospital. He served in the following battles: Drainesville, Seven Days before Richmond, Second battle of Bull Run, Gettysburg, Mine Run, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna River and Bethesda Church. The whole regiment was mustered out under fire at the last place, June 1864. Mr. Smith afterwards passed the commission officers' examination at Washington, D. C., but surgeons refused him, owing to his physical disabilities. This Co. went through 23 battles, and Mr. Smith was in all but two. * Sick at General Hospital * Absent, sick since Sept. 10, 1862 * Absent, sick since Dec. 10, 1862 * Pension application: Injury to back, concussion from solid shot, 2nd Battle of Bull Run, could not walk, sent to hospital and treated in Finlay Hospital Washington, D.
