* Born in Shanksville, Somerset Co. Pa. 
* Enlisted 1863 as Private in Co. H 1st Maryland Potomac Home Brigade Cavalry 
(Coles Cavalry) 
* Enlisted or mustered in Feb. 29, 1864 
* Discharged or mustered out June 28, 1865 
* Discharged as Private at Harpers Ferry by reason of end of war 
* Pension application: Claim #573,738 for near total deafness, rejected Aug. 19, 
1893; Reopens his claim on the grounds that Act of Apr. 3, 1884 allows $2 per 
month for total or nearly total deafness of one ear, Act of Nov. 15, 1887 allows 
$4 per month and Act of Aug. 27, 1888 allows $10 per month
